Wow, if you squint just enough, Michael Douglas is a dead ringer for the flamboyant entertainer Liberace.
Caught on set of the new HBO biopic about singer/pianist/entertainer Liberace, Douglas gets into character in a dark wig, an orange complexion and wrap-around shades. Playing his alleged lover Scott Thorson is Matt Damon in a shaggy, blonde wig.
The film is being directed by Steven Soderbergh (“Magic Mike”) and will reportedly air on HBO.
They make a pretty convincing couple. I could see Michael Douglass rocking a bejeweled Santa cloak. In the scene they were filming, this faux on-screen couple are seen shopping for a car.
The film is being called “Behind the Candelabra” and is based on Thorson’s book “Behind The Candelabra: My Life With Liberace.”
The book tells the story of Thorson’s five year romance with Liberace which ended in a palimony lawsuit. In 1982, Thorson filed a $113 million lawsuit against Liberace but they settled out of court four years later for $95,000.
The flick was supposed to begin filming in 2008 but was delayed after Michael Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010.
Filming began on July 16, the photos are from the Beverly Hills set, and the crew will eventually begin filming in Palm Springs (where Liberace lived) and move on to Las Vegas where the singer found the most fame.
Dan Akroyd is also in the film playing Liberace’s longtime manager and Rob Lowe will play the plastic surgeon tasked with the bizarre request to make Thorson’s face resemble Liberace’s. Debbie Reynolds will play Liberace’s mother.
