Friday morning, ex Spice Girl Emma B. announced she gave birth to her second son. The announcement brought back memories of those bygone days when my friends and I would wear 4” platform sneakers and fight over who got to be Posh Spice. And who knew, 17 years later, we had it right? If there’s one ex Spice Girl you’d want to be, it’s David Beckham’s Royal Wedding guest.
After Spice World came out, we kind of moved on to the next big thing, but the Spice Girls were still the most commercially successful British music group since the Beatles. So what happened to our beloved Spice Girls?
Scary Spice: Mel B.: Melanie Brown was the first Spice Girl to give birth. She also went through a whirlwind romance and subsequent nasty split with Eddie Murphy, with whom she had a child, though there was question over the paternity until Murphy owned up to it. Brown said of the incident: “The less said about the Beverly Hills Cop the better.”
Today, Brown lives in Los Angeles and is married to movie producer Stephen Belafonte. She is currently pregnant with her third child. She’s appeared on Dancing With the Stars and the Australian Version of The X-Factor.
Posh Spice: Victoria Beckham: Do we really need to recap Victoria Beckham’s dream life? After marrying David Beckham in 1999, the media immediately dubbed the couple “Posh and Becks”, and the two are expecting their fourth child in the summer. Victoria has had immense success as a fashion designer, appearing on the cover of Vogue three times in one year, albeit different editions.
Baby Spice: Emma B: Emma B. announced the birth of her second child Friday, despite being diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition that can inhibit fertility. Emma has released a few solo albums since her days with The Spice Girls, and two reached the UK’s Top10. She’s also appeared on the UK version of The X-Factor.
Ginger Spice: Geri Halliwell: Halliwell gave birth to her daughter in 2006, naming her Bluebell Madonna. Explaining the unusual name choice, Halliwell said, “What really clinched it for me was my mother telling me that the bluebell is increasingly rare—so it’s a precious flower, which seems just right for my daughter.” Halliwell was a judge on the British talent show Popstars: The Rivals, which created the group Girls Aloud. Halliwell has also released a few solo albums, which received limited success.
Sporty Spice: Melanie C: Melanie Chisholm has released four albums, earning nominations for BRIT and ECHO awards. She has her own record company, Red Girl Records, and was nominated at the Laurence Olivier Awards for her acting chops. In 2009, Chisholm gave birth to her daughter, Scarlet Starr. She was the last Spice Girl to become a mom. She’s openly discussed her battles with clinical depression and an eating disorder.
