Actress Uma Thurman is the latest to join the star-studded cast of “Nymphomaniac,” the Lars Von Trier vehicle that explores a viscera of dark sexual themes.
For those who haven’t seen his latest film “Melancholia” starring Kristen Dunst or the explicitly sexual and tortuous “Antichrist,” Lars is something of a l’enfant terrible in the indie film world—a Cannes Film favorite who made those “sympathetic” comments at the 2011 festival regarding Adolf Hitler—that stars jump at a chance to work with. Jump out of their clothes and into each other that is.
But it’s not what’re you thinking. Yes, the sex is reportedly unsimulated, but Just Being John Malkovich your way into any of these movie stars’ bodies and you’ll begin to understand where they’re coming from. See, if a director has a foreign last name, it’s art. If the director has the name Michael Bay, it’s porn.
This debate was brought to the forefront when cast member Shia LaBeouf said to MTV regarding the sex scenes, “Nymphomaniac is what you think it is. It is Lars von Trier, making a movie about what he's making. For instance, there's a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we're doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we'll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening.”
Co-star Stellan Skarsgard touched on this subject with The Hollywood Reporter saying “When we call this a porno, it’s meant ironically, but irony doesn’t work well in print. The film is sexually explicit but, believe me, it will be avery, very bad wanking movie.”
Uma’s role is still unclear at this point. All that’s known is she’ll be joining an IMDb page with Shia, Stellan, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, and the film’s lead, French actress-singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. Nicole, who just starred in the steamy The Paperboy with Zac Efron, is also attached to the fringes of this.
