The Starter Wife Gets Cancelled

February 12, 2009

The Starter Wife, starring Debra Messing, has just been cancelled. To be honest, we sort of didn’t even realize it was still on the air anyway. The episode that aired on December 12th ended up being the series finale.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news to all the cougars out there this morning. The show debuted in 2007, and was even nominated for 10 Emmys. But in the end, the viewership just wasn’t there. The Starter Wife was only drawing in 2.4 million viewers per episode, while the standard for cable is 6 million. That’s not even close! We’re surprised it stuck around for as long as it did!

But USA made a statement today saying the show was a “critical and creative success”, whatever that means. They also called the last episode a “satisfying conclusion” to the franchise. Well someone who probably isn’t too satisfied right now is Debra Messing because she’s back to being out of work!
