Tracy Morgan is working hard to repair his image following his homophobic rant. On Friday, Morgan met with a group of homeless gay teens and victims of antigay violence in an effort to educate himself. The meeting was organized by GLAAD, and two of the attendees released a statement saying:
“We really appreciate that we were able to meet with Tracy Morgan…We hope that our stories have the power to change not only Tracy’s perspective, but those of any parent who may be struggling with and accepting their child.”
I really don’t believe Tracy Morgan is a homophobe. I just think his act sucked. He’s a great comedy actor, but as far as his standup goes, take away his loud, crazy voice, and I don’t think there’s any jokes in there. I honestly believe Tracy just thought people were dumb enough to think homosexuality is funny, but he didn’t even know how to write a joke around that idea.
Now don’t get me wrong, when I see the dude at the Ralph’s in West Hollywood wearing a shirt that says, “I F-ck Dudes” with a bright blue faux-hawk and booty shorts, I’m going to laugh. Hard. Because that’s funny. But the actual idea of men being attracted to men—I think most of society has evolved past thinking that’s funny.
Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons is a good friend of Morgan’s and a gay rights advocate. Simmons said that Morgan phoned him after the rant.
“He had been crying. He was really devastated. He spilled his guts to me,” Simmons said. “The sad truth is that sometimes artists and rappers say what people in their community are thinking. I knew that Tracy was a person who wants to make people laugh and that he said what he said because in the communities he plays to there is homophobia. It is prevalent.”
