After Tom Cruise catches his breath from scaling giant buildings in Dubai, looks like he’s planning to start Top Gun 2.
“We’re working on it,” Cruise told MTV News.
For about a year now, there have been rumors that Cruise, along with director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, are reuniting for a sequel to Top Gun. Kind of scary, just because it's a known fact that when Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer are in the same room together, that room spontaneously explodes, unleashing a slew of angry pirates, racecars and couch stuffing.
Christopher McQuarrie was the man originally hired to pen the script for Top Gun 2, but then the whole thing seemed to fizzle out. Now, Cruise says:
“I don’t think Chris is going to write it. Chris is directing ‘One Shot’ right now, which I’m acting. We’ve got to go back…and finish it.”
"I said to Tony [Scott] I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder.’ Tony and I and Jerry [Bruckheimer], we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.' "
Cruise says the two key elements that would make the sequel worthwhile are 1) a good script and 2) the freedom to make the movie like they did in 1986.
"I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," he said. "If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.' "
