Despite some trivial missteps and an approaching 50th birthday, Tom Cruise will always be a box office Top Gun.

In a candid and lengthy interview with Playboy magazine, the actor and all-around superstar reveals just why he is so cool and what it is that makes him tick.

First and foremost, the article brings up a good point, in recent years the media has crucified Cruise for a few flare-ups that just weren’t that big of a deal. So he put his shoes on the couch, made a few controversial statements about ADHD and his chosen religion is based on a dime store self-help book… but its not like he’s gotten a string of DUI’s, screamed racial expletives into the faces of authority figures, screwed a prostitute that was actually a man while high on Meth dressed as a clown (that’s had to have happened, right?).

Cruise acknowledges the actual incidents he’s been held accountable for, “do I make mistakes? Yeah. I don’t care who you are, life has challenges… I want to look at those things for what they really are, take responsibility, make it right and move on… I remember as a kid I wanted an adventurous life, and I’ve gotten it. So if someone judges me harshly, it’s okay. I don’t even judge them harshly for doing it."

So if Cruise isn’t holding anything against us, what are we really holding against him?

The fact of the matter is, a good celebrity meltdown makes us feel better about ourselves. When people who “have it all” behave erratically, we can deduce that maybe owning all those motorcycles, racecars, airplanes, villas in France, dating that supermodel and having babies that GAP campaigns covet, won't solve all our problems. Therefore we can remain comfortable with mediocrity and a subscription to Direct TV. Perspective.

But that’s not the path Cruise has chosen , “I have respect for what other people believe. What I believe in my own life is that it’s a search for how I can do things better, whether it’s being a better man or a better father or finding ways for myself to improve. Individuals have to decide what is true and real for them. I’m fortunate in the life I have.”

Setting psychology aside, and getting back to what really matters, the article runs the gamut of his movies, past, present, and presently filming: Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, Rock of Ages (a musical in which his performance actually earned the wave of approval from Def Leopard), and One Shot based on the series of books by Lee Child that follow the massively intimidating drifter/scrapper/badass character of Jack Reacher—despite being way too short, Cruise apparently pulls it off.

A good deal of emphasis is put on Tom’s daredevil ways and how he insists on doing all his own stunts (media and otherwise). Why? Because it's cooler that way—for him and for us.

Just so you know, that jump from the tower in Ghost Protocol wasn’t CGI, “as great as visual effects are, it just would not have been the same experience for the audience… And look, if I’m at the third or the second floor, a fall will kill me anyway. [laughs] I might as well be on the 124th floor.”

Five foot seven inch Tom Cruise goes BIG. Like him or not, it’s hard to deny that he’s an excellent entertainer. And thank God for that, cause we can only sit in our sedentary lives for so long watching this wave of “reality” TV that exploits actual f**k-ups.

The June issue of Playboy magazine hits newsstands on May 18.
