Tiger Woods Breaks Silence: "I Have Let My Family Down"

December 02, 2009
by:

Tiger Woods has stayed relatively mum about his recent car accident and accusations of an affair--until now.

The pro golfer just released a lengthy statement on his website talking about how he let his family down and how he regrets his actions. Read his apology statement below and tell us your thoughts on it...

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it's difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

Yes Tiger, I agree with you; just because you aare a celebrity doesnt mean that you have to share your private life with the public as well. Hope all goes well and you and your wife sort things out for the sake of the children. U dont owe us an apology; theapology should go to Elin and the other members of your family who stood by U and gave you moral support. Take care.

I agree with myholly787. Tiger fits the profile of someone with narcissistic personality disorder. He might want the read the book "The Wizard of Oz And Other Narcissists" by Eleanor D. Payson, M.S.W. to help him through his mess.

I had really thought that he had a solid marriage with the kids. It is sad when the celebrities allow themselves to think that they can do whatever they want with no consequences. His wife must be so hurt by his actions.

If he hadn't acted like an idiot after the accident, maybe the media frenzy would have gone away. Hey these guys can smell "road kill" miles away. Just ask John Edwards.

I don't understand why someone who had a wandering eye gets married at such a young age. He would have been better off to play with the girls and then get married. Look at George C and John M. They have the right idea.

it's sad but virtually everybody cheats. famous or not, rich or not, man or woman. if you've been cheated on in the past, or think you are now, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT .... expose infidelity and cheaters! there is no reason to live a fake, unhappy life... www.cheaterzzz.com

Said it before and I'll say it again. This is a private matter between him and his wife and family. It's up to them to work it out IN PRIVATE!!! He is a human being prone to human failings. The first one of you out there that has NEVER made any kind of stupid mistake can cast the first stone. Till that perfect person is found I suggest the rest of you mind your own business!

Just because someone is famous does not give the public or the media to put them under a looking glass. I'm glad he had the nads to come out and make sure he let everyone know that he was going to keep this a private as he possibly can. I would suggest that the media and public just leave them alone.

He is quite right .It is his car he wrecked and possibly his marriage .He did it allllll by himself .Why should he have to tell all to the public . He is going through enough private hell already .

I do not understand how he let his family down. By crashing his car? By not making a statement to the police? I am sure there are plenty of sleazebag women who will accuse him of having an affair with them. He is rich & famous. There isn't any proof of any of this. Unfortunately, being in the public eye leaves a person open to whatever douchebag is hanging around. Look what happened to Letterman.
