Remember when Tiger Woods’ name was synonymous with the word golf? It’s sad to admit that his golf game has taken a major back seat to his highly-publicized extramarital affairs.
We’re taking a closer look at Tiger’s worst year—and it all started one year ago with a car accident. Who knew that would be the incident that got the ball rolling, ending with his divorce from Elin Nordegren in August.
It’s been a whirlwind of a year for Tiger Woods, and here’s the breakdown…
Prior to knowing about his multiple mistresses, the world was shocked and concerned over Woods’ car crash on November 27, 2009.
But within days, the internet was abuzz with rumors Elin had attacked Tiger with a golf club, leading to the accident. Little did we know she had probably finally had enough of his infidelity.
Believe it or not, the Rachel Uchitel rumor actually happened before the car accident. But within a couple weeks, numerous other women came out of the woodwork claiming to have slept with the golf great. Some were more forthcoming than others, even sharing dirty texts conversations with tabloids as proof of the affair, aka a big payday.
By Christmas of 2009, 14 mistresses had come forward, each with their own damaging story of sex with the married golfer.
Tiger headed to rehab for “sex addiction” right before the new year, and remained there until February.
Report: Tiger Woods in Rehab
Elin, bless her heart, even visited her husband to show her support, participating in group sessions with him. But that support quickly fizzled, and her focus soon turned to the couple’s two kids Sam and Charlie, and divorce.
Back to Golf:
Tiger returned to golf for the Masters in March 2010.
He finally addressed his personal life at the Masters in March. "I was living a life of a lie, I really was. And I was doing a lot of things ... that hurt a lot of people. And stripping away denial and rationalization you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly,” he said during the infamous press conference.
He golfed terribly, and lost his cool on the course multiple times.
Divorce rumors started in March, but it wasn’t official until August. The actual payout was never officially made public, but sources say Elin got $110 million in the settlement. It’s the biggest celebrity divorce payout to date.
Elin signed a clause to keep her mouth shut about her marriage to Tiger, and has kept her promise, aside from one interview with People magazine.
She continues to live quietly in Florida with her two children, visiting her homeland of Sweden whenever possible. She’s unable to permanently move there with the kids as part of the divorce settlement.
The Guilt Sets In:
Tiger released a statement after his divorce was finalized, making his ex-wife look even more like a saint.
He said at the time, "This is a very painful, personal and private time for our family. Throughout this entire time, Elin has shown unwavering concern and support for our children. She is a wonderful mother. I know that the two of us will do everything we can to help our children adjust to this new family situation.”
Tiger most recently wrote an essay for Newsweek, detailing how painful this past year has been for him.
He wrote, "The physical pain from that car accident has long healed. But the pain in my soul is more complex and unsettling; it has been far more difficult to ease--and to understand. But this much is obvious now: my life was out of balance, and my priorities were out of order. I made terrible choices and repeated mistakes. I hurt the people whom I loved the most. And even beyond accepting the consequences and responsibility, there is the ongoing struggle to learn from my failings."
Tiger’s fall from grace is one of the largest of any celebrity to date. But as we always say, Hollywood loves a comeback. Even we’re rooting for him to have a better year in 2011.
