It could be a banner night in the pool for U.S. world-record holders. Michael Phelps is a favorite in the 200m free, while Aaron Peirsol and Natalie Coughlin look to better the world records they set in the men's and women's 100m backstroke at the U.S. Trials. On land, the U.S. expects to challenge the world-champion host nation in the team final in men's gymnastics. On sand, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh defend their 2004 gold medal in women's beach volleyball. "Everybody's better — we don't take any team for granted," says May-Treanor. Finally, the synchronized platform final may be the top U.S. chance for a diving medal, with David Boudia and Thomas Finchum trying to disrupt China's dominance in the sport. "You try and look at it like you're right behind the Chinese, and if you hit your dives, you can beat them," says Boudia.
Closer @ 9pm
G.W. Bailey has long added strong support to this crime-time series as Det. Lt. Provenza, an old-school police vet bumbling through new-school rules, barely getting by but with a dry wit and an underdog's shrug. Provenza steps center stage tonight, getting in hot water (yet again) when he loses evidence from a successfully executed sting operation. Brenda and her squad are subsequently forced to free their prime suspect, but there's a sliver of hope: A steamed Chief Pope gives the team a 48-hour window to retrieve the lost materials.
The Middleman @ 10pm
Wendy and her boss face a herculean task when an old Middleman enemy known as the Candle resurfaces, so they seek none other than Kevin Sorbo for help. Sorbo plays a cryogenically frozen 1969 Middleman who has a little trouble adjusting his mind-set to the modern world once he gets thawed. Still, he does his best to work with our heroes to try to catch the bad guy, and he's also able to provide some relationship advice for a troubled Wendy, who's worried about how her job may negatively affect her romantic life.
American Mall @ 9pm
This made-for-cable musical is driven by a rocking score and set in that pantheon of American teen culture — the mall. Amid the singing and dancing, romance breaks out between singer-songwriter Ally (Nina Dobrev), who works at her mother's music store, and Joey (Rob Mayes), an aspiring rock star who works at the mall as a janitor. But the mall owner's spoiled daughter, Madison (Autumn Reeser), has designs of her own, and she'll stop at nothing to bring them to fruition.

Things just keep rolling along for cable's favorite pot-dealing suburban mom as Nancy gets all fired up when Guillermo bogarts her on the proceeds from their latest operation and she decides to make a big deal out of it with the big boss. Those "kinder, gentler coyote" wannabes Andy and Doug get tips on how to best maximize their "illegal immigration for profit" enterprise, and Silas' visit to Lisa's store evolves into something more than just business.
The Middleman @ 10pm
The Middleman and Wendy make like Jack and Rose and put on their finest Titanic-era fashions to attend a theme party on a yacht. But this isn't all fun and games; it's work-related, of course. A survivor from the Titanic must be stopped from playing a cursed tuba, or all who hear its sound will drown. So Wendy and her boss focus on destroying the brass instrument, but they find that focus difficult to maintain when Lacey and Noser show up at the party. Later, the Middleman and Lacey finally go out on their first date.
Date My Ex: Jo & Slade @ 10pm
Bravo squeezes more juice from Orange County in this dating-competition series featuring Jo De La Rosa, wild-child sexpot from The Real Housewives of Orange County. Jo's quest to find a love connection continues in tonight's second episode, as she shoots off guns with one date, flirts with another while golfing and tries to get in tune with yet another over music. Complicating matters: a big fat fib, and ex-beau Slade Smiley — who continually agitates her wooers and pursuers.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl @ 10:30pm
A married couple books Belle for a foursome and Ben suggests he sign on for a one-time deal. Belle is shocked - not only was he appalled by what she does for a living up until very recently, but what makes him think it is that easy to become a professional escort over night? Ben begs her to give him a chance - he puts himself through Belle's "interview" test and finally she agrees to give him a shot. The couple arrives and the fun begins: Belle with Kate; Ben with Kate; Belle with Liam - then Kate and Liam start to make love all on their own while Belle and Ben find themselves in an awkward tryst.
