Despite his silence while shooting up the theater, James Holmes spoke to police during his arrest.
At a press conference outside of the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado, the public was given exclusive details about the shooting that took place during an early Friday morning screening of The Dark Knight Rises. One of the disturbing facts that stood out… The shooter resembled The Joker.
According to the New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Holmes was dressed as the Batman villain and told police and identified himself as “The Joker.”
“We have some information, most of it is public,” said Kelly. “It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman.”
As a result of the attack, security will be upped in the New York City to avoid any copycat incidents.
“To raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs,” said Kelly.
A total of three – and possibly four – firearms were used in the attack. There is no way of knowing how many rounds or magazines were fired yet.
In addition to guns, Holmes used tear gas in order to blind his victims before opening fire. The character of the Joker has a history of using his own version of gas to make victims laugh uncontrollably, both in the comic book series and in Tim Burton’s 1989 interpretation of Batman.
The Commissioner said that a booking photo would not be released today.
Police were able to respond in just over a minute. They are confident that he acted alone, but a full investigation will take place.
As of now it is unclear how Holmes entered the theater.
