The Dark Knight Rises is making headlines today and not in the way Christopher Nolan would have hoped.

During a midnight screening of the final Dark Knight film, a gunman wearing a mask opened fired on a suburban Denver theater killing at least 13 people and injuring 38 others. The massacre happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. MT this morning.

The gunman was apprehended and identified as 24-year-old James Holmes. No motive has been identified, but as of now federal law officials do not believe the incident is tied to any terrorist movements, nor does it have any connection with the film itself.

Perhaps even more disturbing, Holmes remained calm and silent throughout the shooting. According to witnesses, Holmes walked into the theater with a gas mask, rifle and a handgun.

What could have been a fanboy stunt turned deadly when he threw two gas grenades. The grenades exploded, cutting out visibility in the theater. Holmes fired a round into the ceiling and then opened fire on the crowd.

Cell phone video footage reveals chaos of the aftermath including people with blood on their clothing.

The shooter, a resident of Aurora, Colorado where the theater is located, was apprehended without force.

A statement from Warner Brothers has been released:

“Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.”

Holmes’ mother, Anne, is a resident of San Diego, CA suburb Rancho Penasquitos.

Celebrities are taking their reactions to Twitter.

"My heart goes out to all the people affected in the Aurora, CO shooting. May God be with that town and their families... " tweeted Eva Longoria.

Billy Ray Cyrus added, “Oh no ! Just woke up and turned on the news … Praying for victims. So sorry and sad." Story developing…
