Former NFL’er Terrell Owens has gotten a bad rap lately. He missed his child-support court appearance last week, could be facing jail time, and reportedly owes $20,000 in back child support payments. Meanwhile, he goes to beach parties with cast members from “Dancing With The Stars.” Go figure.
However, Hollyscoop found out that Terrell’s absence at his court appearance wasn’t because he’s a dead-beat dad, the footballers lawyer never told him to show up!
“Unfortunately, Terrell Owens was never informed by his attorney that he was due in court last week in Georgia regarding his current child support case. This led to many negative headlines for Mr. Owens, calling him a "no show" and "facing jail time" for the recent missed court appearance,” says a rep for Terrell.
Because of this communication mix-up, Terrell’s lawyer takes the blame, and for that, Terrell fired him!
The child support is going to baby mama Melanie Smith and their 7-year-old daughter and reportedly, Terrell has a new court date set for this Thursday. Rumor had it that if he doesn’t show up, he’ll be sent to jail this time, as he’s missed two other court dates in the past. However, Terrell says this won’t be a problem.
“Mr. Owens is making the necessary arrangements to pay child support due to Ms. Smith in the Georgia case. He regrets that he is no longer able to pay child support based upon his previous NFL income,” says the rep.
Oh yeah, Terrell used to play for various NFL teams, was released in 2009, played for an Indoor Football League team and is now a free agent. Basically, the child support payments he was making when he was in the NFL are way too expensive for him to continue now, however, he'll pay them if it's the last thing he does!
“Mr. Owens has been working diligently with his attorneys to modify his onerous child support payments so that they are in line with his current income and state guidelines, as well as to establish visitation with his children.”
