It’s safe to say the majority of people were tuning in to watch Super Bowl XLIV last night. The official numbers have just come in, and the game is now the most-watched program of all-time! And we’re not just talking about the Super Bowl ratings.
According to the Neilson ratings, the New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts showdown drew 106.5 million viewers, crushing previous Super Bowl records and beating out 1983's M*A*S*H finale, which garnered 105.97 million viewers. This is the first sporting event to ever break 100 million viewers.
Viewership was up 8% from 2009's Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals nail-biter, which was seen by a then-record 98.7 million viewers. Analysts believe New Orleans’ compelling comeback story added to the number of eyeballs.
The top-rated market was New Orleans, but the second highest wasn't Indianapolis. It was Washington, where a huge snowstorm presumably kept many residents at home and in front of the TV.
