What does Sophia Bush want for her birthday? For underprivileged kids to get an education. Why? Because she’s awesome!
The “One Tree Hill” actress turned 30 on July 8th. For her present, she made a very special wish for her fans to donate $30 to help build schools in underdeveloped countries.
Sophia’s dubbed the endeavor Pencils for Promise.
“My Impossible challenge: raising $30,000 for my 30th birthday so that children in the developing world have access to education,” Sophia’s message reads on the Pencils of Promise Crowdrise profile.
Fans who donate $30 and submit a 250 word essay about overcoming the impossible in their own lives are entered to win a trip with Sophia to visit a school they will build in Central America. There, they will get a first person look at the impact that they helped create in young peoples’ lives.
If you’re wondering if she met that goal, the answer is yes. In fact, she blasted by it.
“Sophia reached her $30,000 goal thanks to her fans and her friend Mark Foster (Foster the People), who surprised her with a $10 K donation,” a rep for the actress said told Hollyscoop. “She's now aiming to raise $60K to build two schools.”
The number of $30,000, which Sophia previously thought of as “a lot of money,” will allow for a three-classroom structure to be built in La Guadalupana, Guatemala. It will give 180 children of the community access to consistent education resources.
Of course, the immediate response from fans came as a bit of a shock for Sophia, making for a nice birthday surprise.
“I spent yesterday in awe of people. Inspired by the generosity of the human spirit,” she wrote. “We hit our goal -- five days early no less.”
