Simon Confirms He's Leaving Idol

We’ve finally heard it from the horse’s mouth! Simon Cowell has officially admitted he’s leaving American Idol after this season. He’ll be solely focusing on bringing UK hit The X Factor to the U.S.

Cowell told reporters Monday, “The X Factor will launch in 2011. Because of that, this will be my last season on American Idol.”

According to a press release, Simon will be both the executive director and judge of the American version of the show. “I’m thrilled that we have put a date on the launch of the U.S. version of The X Factor, and delighted to be continuing to work with FOX,” Cowell continued. “We have a fantastic relationship, a great team and are all very excited about this.”

Many are speculating that Paula Abdul, who left Idol over the summer, is being considered as a judge for X Factor. Simon just added fuel to the fire, telling reporters, “I adore Paula. Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity. Because I miss her.”

We feel bad for Randy, Kara DioGuardi, and Ellen Degeneres! Without Simon, Idol just won’t be the same. And if Paula follows Simon to X Factor, that will blow Idol out of the water! Sounds like it may be nearing the end of an era!

Season 9 of American Idol premieres Tuesday at 8PM on FOX. Will you be tuning in to see Simon’s last season?
