Report: Simon to Leave American Idol

We’ve heard a lot of chatter about Simon Cowell being involved in new projects—the latest being his desire to bring X Factor to the U.S. But what does that mean for his involvement with American Idol?

According to the Times of London, Cowell is preparing to make an announcement about a new arrangement with Fox early next year. His contract with Idol expires in May, and many are speculating that the upcoming season will be his last.

X Factor is an extremely popular show in the UK, and last weeks finale drew in 19 million viewers. The report in yesterday's Times said Cowell is "considering" stepping down from Idol to do a US version of X Factor, and that he told this to Fox entertainment chief Peter Rice at a meeting in London six weeks ago.

Rather than appear only online which was previously reported, X Factor would air on Fox. Cowell told a BBC interviewer that he definitely plans to launch the show in the US. "It has to go to America. There has to be an American version of the show," he said.

“To not take 'The X Factor' to the biggest market in the world would be crazy."

First Paula, and now Simon?! American Idol definitely won’t be the same without him!
