Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Columbia, Shakira began writing music at the age of eight and was presented with her first record deal less than five years later.
Although her initial album attempts failed to grab the attention of the music industry, Shakira continued to work for the attention she knew she deserved, which she eventually obtained soon after releasing Pies Descalzos in 1996. Her unique Latin-rock infused sound quickly resulted in a top position of Latin Billboard charts and a growing Spanish-language fan base.
Even with her increasing popularity among the Latin community, Shakira was set on breaking into the American charts and ultimately moved to Florida where she learned to write songs in English and hired Emilio Estefan as her producer. In 2001, she released her debut English-language album Laundry Service, which reached No. 3 on the charts and sold over 200,000 copies in its first week with the help of the hit singles "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes." She also received a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album in part of her 2000 album Shakira: MTV Unplugged.
The new Latin sensation found similar success with the release of her Spanish-language album Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and the English-language album Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in 2005. She went on to drop her concert albums Live (2007) and Oral Fixation Tour (2008) before releasing her sixth studio album She Wolf (2009) with its hit single "She Wolf" reaching the top of the charts worldwide. Her music continued to flood the radios across the world in 2009, following the premiere of her next album Sale el Sol, which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Apart from her musical talent, Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation in hopes of helping Colombia children in need. In addition, she was honored with a UN International Labor Organization award in 2010, and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Shakira has most recently been featured on Pitbull's hit single "Get It Started" off his album Global Warming (2012), joined Jay-Z's Roc Nation record label and is set to release her eighth studio album, currently called Truth or Dare, in the spring of 2013.
