Seth MacFarlane. biography
Seth Woodbury MacFarlane was born on October 26, 1973, in Kent, Connecticut, drawn to the mechanics behind the art of cartoon creation. He landed his first paying gig at an early age establishing his own comic strip in a local newspaper before studying video and animation at Rhode Island's School of Design. There, Seth grabbed the attention of Hanna-Barbera Productions with his thesis film Life of Larry, later known as Family Guy, who later hooked him up with a job in Los Angeles following his graduation in 1995.
While working as both a writer and animator at Barbera Productions, including on the show Johnny Bravo (1997), Seth continued to strengthen his animated baby Life of Larry, changing its name to Larry & Steve. He was able to gain the attention of Fox executives who provided him with a small budget to produce a series pilot. After six months of sleep deprivation, Seth hooked the executives with his authentic humor brought to life by his unfiltered characters in a satire of the American family, titled Family Guy.
Bought by Fox in 1998, Family Guy premiered following Fox's broadcast of Super Bowl XXXIII in January 1999 to over 22 million viewers. With Seth voicing the three main characters (Stewie, Peter, Brian Griffin) and the show's refreshing adult content, the show ended its first season with an average of 12.8 million viewers tuning in to Stewie's offensive baby talk. Its second season premiered in a more competitive time slot in September of that year up against NBC's hit series Frasier. With declining ratings, Fox put the show on their non-permanent schedule, but after little improvement, cancelled it.
A few months later, however, Fox announced they had ordered 13 more episodes to create the third season of Family Guy. Premiering in November 2011, the show was once again pitted against then-reigning rating-champs Friends and Survivor, ultimately leading to suffering ratings and its official cancellation in May 2002.
Despite being cancelled, the show found even more commercial success through its reruns on Adult Swim and DVD sales in 2003. It became the best-selling TV DVD of 2003 when it sold 2.2 million copies of its first and second season. Its third season DVD fund similar success with sales of over a million copies, ultimately regaining the attention of Fox who turned around and ordered 35 new episodes of Family Guy.
The fourth season of Family Guy kicked off with the premiere of its first episode "North by North Quahog" in May 2005, which brought in over 11.85 million viewers.
The show continues to be one of Fox and Television's biggest animated series hits and has since been honored for its ground-breaking humor with several accolades, including the 2000 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance ("Stewie Griffin"), multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Animated Program (2000, 2005, 2006, 2008), the 2002 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics ("You've Got a Lot to See") and the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture ("Christmas is Killing Us").
Family Guy also spawned the films Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story (2005) and Family Guy Presents: It's a Trap (2010) as well as the spin-off series The Cleveland Show (2009 - 2013).
Seth's other projects include, the video game Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse (2012), the animated series American Dad! (2005 - 2013), the comedy Ted (2012) with Mark Wahlberg, its sequel Ted 2 (release date unknown), the western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West (unknown) alongside Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried, and hosting the 85th Academy Awards.
