Selena Gomez began her journey in show business with a two-year acting gig on the kids' show Barney and Friends. Once she left the show, she was able to continue her growth as a performer by landing quest-star roles on Disney Channel's The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana. Her big break arrived when she was cast as the lead on Wizards of Waverly Place (2007) and released her first music album (2009).

Born Selena Marie Gomez to Amanda Cornett, who was 16 years old at the time, and Ricardo Gomez in Grand Prairie, Texas, Selena's career began like most entertainment careers, minor roles that hopefully turn into leads. After being dropped from the Barney and Friends show, Selena auditioned for many projects but was offered mostly small roles, including her role in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and her role as Julie on Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005). The tone of her career dramatically changed when she was offered a guest star role as Gwen in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and the role of evil Mikayla in Hannah Montana. Her career began shaping in 2007 when she was cast as the starring role, Alex Russo in the series Wizards of Waverly Place, which later became a popular show.

In 2008, Selena participated in her first animation movie, Horton Hears a Who! followed by a starring role in the ABC Family movie Another Cinderella Story alongside Disney Channel superstar Andrew Seeley. She also starred in Princess Protection Program (2009) with Demi Lovato, and Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (2009) for the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise. She also started working on music career, recording a cover of "Cruella de Vil" for DisneyMania 6, three songs for Another Cinderella Story soundtrack, and a single track for the animated movie, Tinker Bell. She also recorded the single "One and the Same" as a duet with co-star and friend Demi Lovato for her movie Princess Protection Program. Toward the end of 2008, Selene signed her first record contract with Hollywood Records and released her debut album, Kiss and Tell, in 2009. She later made a cameo in the Jonas Brothers' video for their single, "Burnin Up." In June, Selena and Demi appeared in a special edition of PEOPLE prior to premiere of their movie, Princess Protection Program, in which Selena pled the fifth when asked about her relationship with Twilight 'hunk' Taylor Lautner.

Although a great entertainer, Selena has a passion for helping others and is a spokesperson for Borden Milk, appearing in commercials and ads. She also worked on a teen-voting campaign, which encouraged teenagers to learn more about the 2008 presidential candidates. She's also heavily involved with the charity Raise Hope for Congo, which helps raise awareness about the violence against Congolese women. In 2008, Selena played a large role in the "Runway for Life" benefit for St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. She was later named the youngest ambassador to UNICEP at the age of 17 in 2009.

After launching her Kmart clothing collection Dream Out Loud in 2010, Selena released her sophomore album A Year Without Rain with her band The Scene. Reportedly, Selena started filming her new movie, Spring Breakers (2012) in February.
