Why Ryan Gosling Turned Down ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

When the news broke that rando non-famous actors Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam will be starring in the screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, the world basically revolted.

Who are these non-famous people?

Apparently a LOT of A-lister were approached for the parts, but almost everyone turned down the chance to star in the S&M style sex-crazed pulp film.

Ryan Gosling was actually the number one choice (which is strange because anyone whose read the book would know he’s not quite domineering enough for the role), but he simply passed because he was “not interested.”

Then they tried to get Garrett Hedlund from Tron and On The Road, but he said “no” as well.

For the role of Anastasia, they heavily courted fan favorite, Like Crazy star Felicity Jones, but eventually decided that at age 30, that she was “too old.”

They also wanted A-lister Shailene Woodley and Elizabeth Olsen, but Shailene had a conflict with her upcoming franchise film Divergent and Elizabeth Olsen simply passed.

So yeah, that’s how we arrived at Dakota and Charlie…everyone’s next to last choice.

Remarkably, the Internet’s favorite casting choices, Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel, were NEVER approached for the role.
