Actor Robert Downey Jr. appeared on the "Tonight Show With Jay Leno" Thursday night to promote his new movie, “The Avengers” and had a surprise for the host backstage - baby photos!
Jay asked the "Iron Man" star if he could show them to the audience, Downey at first declined, insisting: "I would get in huge trouble. I have to exercise just a little restraint.”
“I'm sorry,” said Downey as the crowd groaned with disappointment. Then he relented, as if Leno had changed his mind. “I mean. . .if you want me to, I will."
The first photo revealed eight-week-old son Exton Elias sleeping while cradled in the arms of Downey’s producer wife, Susan. The doting mom was wearing a gold chain and pendant with their son’s name engraved on it.
“He’s so darn cute, isn’t he?” Downey asked. “You get one, that's it. Unless of course you want to see the other one."
The second photo showed Exton in what one could describe as a "superhero" pose, bright-eyed and wearing a striped hoodie and colorful orange sweatpants.
“That’s a cute picture!” Leno declared, to enthusiastic applause from the audience.
This is Downey’s first child with Susan, 38. He also has an 18-year-old son, Indio, from a previous relationship.
Back in May, Downey dished about being a new dad again to “Esquire”.
“There was all this trepidation, all this projection, all this anticipation and goodwill and a good vibe about it,” he said of his anxieties three weeks before the birth. “And then he was born and they've all just kind of scattered now. It seems like he's always been here.”
As for whether the actor who plays a hero on the big screen wants to be one in real life, he responded: “Do I want to be a hero to my son? No. I would like to be a very real human being. That's hard enough.”
