After blowing through every tissue in your house, gazing at old pictures, and lopping six inches off your hair, there's a natural course that the breakup takes: The Rebound.
But before you put on a glittery top and pick up some stranger at a club, check out our seven rules for rebounding:
1. "The best way to get over someone…"
We all know how this one ends. While women use this cliché, guys prefer: "You just need to get out there and @#%!" Either way, it's kinda true. Not long after her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, Scarlett Johansson was taking off to Mexico with Sean Penn, having lunch with her foot in his crotch. Hey, whatever works! Rebounding with someone new can really help move things along, just make sure you're honest (and they're clean).
2. Keep the past in the past
After ending her
contract relationship with Joe Jonas, Ashley Greene was soon seen with Kings of Leon's Jared Followill, who Greene dated in the past. This is dangerous territory! Unless you've both completely moved on, it's not a good idea to get over an ex by getting with another ex. It's using pain to heal pain. It's like getting a paper cut and putting a hot iron over it instead of a Band-Aid…or something like that. Whatever, just don't do it.
3. Get a little help from your friends
Hey, that's what they're for—introducing you to their hot siblings. After being burned by Tony Parker, Eva Longoria moved on to pal Penelope Cruz's bro, Eduardo Cruz. Turns out the two of them make an even cuter couple than Eva and Tony!
4. Get out of bed. Now.
Dwelling will get you nowhere. Everyone needs some time to dive their head into a bucket of ice cream and tears, but don't do it for long. The sooner you get out there, the sooner you'll forget your old patterns and realize the world is your oyster! A week after her breakup from Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel was out partying and looking damn good. Now she's rumored to be dating Gerard Butler. And Madonna has been a non-stop dating tornado ever since her divorce. After a breakup, it can be hard to get used to doing things solo. But the sooner you start, the sooner you'll get used to it!
5. Focus on the kiddos
If there are kids involved in the breakup, it can make things a lot harder. Not only do you have to heal yourself, you have to make sure the little brats are ok, too! A good rule of thumb is to wait at least six months before you can even start thinking about dating again. Halle Berry and her ex, Gabriel Aubry, have had a very public, nasty breakup and custody battle. While they officially ended it in April 2010, the relationship was said to have been over for quite some time. In September 2010, Halle began dating actor Olivier Martinez, and the relationship still appears to be going on strong. Instead of finding a quick fling, Halle focused on Nahla, and waited to find something more solid. Hey, when you have kids, you have to take everything a little more seriously, especially breakups.
6. Keep loving
Don't turn into a bitter old crazy cat lady! It might be hard to forgive and easy to blame when you're hurting, but don't let cynicism rear its ugly head. Look at Jessica Simpson. After her nasty split with Tony Romo, she held her head high. While most people love using Twitter as a passive-aggressive means of expressing their anger, Jessica tweeted: "everyone needs to know that hope floats." And she floated straight into the arms of her new honey (and fiancé!) Eric Johnson.
7. Don't fling away a fling
True, most flings can be a temporary fix. But they don't necessarily have to be. A few weeks after splitting from Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon began dating Jim Toth. Now, the two are just weeks away from getting married. A rebound can turn into a bona fide relationship, so keep all possibilities open!
We all deal with breakups in our own way, because only we can know what's best for us. But at some point, you're going to need to dust off the past and rebound from the hit. With a few rules in mind, it might take less time than you think to go from sad sack to lucky in love!
