Ray J. biography
Born William Ray Norwood Jr. on January 17, 1981 McComb, Mississippi, Ray J was raised in Carson, California alongside his sister and multi-platinum singer Brandy.
Ray J ignited his career in the entertainment field as L.J. Beckley in the TV series The Sinbad Show (1993-94) before landing a recording contract with Elektra Records in 1995 and releasing his debut album Everything You Want later in the year.
In 1996, Ray J obtained his first substantial role as Cedric Williams in the comedy Mars Attacks! (1996) and co-starred alongside his sister in her TV series Moesha, which ultimately put his name on the Hollywood map.
Ray J released his second album This Ain't A Game in 2001, with it's lead single "Wait A Minute" climbing to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as number 8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hip Songs chart. Following a two-year hiatus, Ray J's third album Raydiation (2005) debuted at number 48 on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 18,321 copies and its Top 20 single "One Wish." That same year, Ray J joined the cast of the TV series One On One, but struggled to match the same fame of his sister.
In February 2007, however, Ray J reached true celebrity status when a homemade sex tape featuring him and then-girlfriend Kim Kardashian was leaked on the web. While Ray J soaked in the fame, Kardashian sued Vivid Entertainment in hopes of obtaining ownership of the tape, but eventually dismissed the suit when Vivid offered a $5 million settlement deal later that year.
Ray J went on to gain more attention with the release of the single "Sexy Can I" off his fourth album All I Feel (2008), which remained at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks. A year later, Ray J landed his own dating reality show For the Love of Ray J on VHI followed closely by his next studio album For The Love of Ray J and the show's second season.
In 2010, Ray J reunited with his sister in their VHI reality series Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business alongside their parents before releasing the show's soundtrack A Family Business in June 2011.
Ray J most recently stirred up controversy with the release of his first single "I Hit It First" off his upcoming album Raydiation 2 (2013). Featuring lyrics that poke fun at his former sex tape-partner Kim Kardashian and her baby-daddy Kanye West, the hit single has since been chilling at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.
