P.S. I Love You

P.S. I Love You is a well-written, funny and emotional chick flick if you like to call it that. Although the overacting in some instances were obvious, most of the characters were believable, some were charming, some were a bit over the top, and some were just right.

Writer/Director Richard LaGravenes must enjoy working with Hilary Swank, bringing her back for his most recent film after working together on his previous 2007 project “Freedom Writers.” The two team up again for “P.S. I Love You.” A movie about Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank, Oscar winner best actress Million Dollar Baby, Oscar winner best actress Boys Don’t Cry, The Reaping, Insomnia, The Gift) a not so care- free woman married to the love of her life, an impulsive carefree Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler, 300, Phantom of The Opera, Lara Croft Tomb Raider). As Gerry is taken from this world by a tragic illness, all the life that Holly had left is sucked out of her as well, leaving her to sulk and grieve all on her own. Luckily, Gerry is no ordinary husband! Planning ahead, Gerry has an assortment of letters prepared to make their way into Holly’s hands in many unexpected ways. These letters are for the sole purpose of helping Holly rediscover herself, while at the same time learning to let go of Gerry for good. With the first letter arriving on Holly’s 30th birthday, it is time for Holly, along with her friends Denise Hennessey (Lisa Kudrow, Friends, Happy Endings, Wonderland, Analyze This, Analyze That) and Sharon McCarthy (Gina Gershon, Prey For Rock and Roll, The Insider, Black and White, Driven) to listen to everything that Gerry has planned for them to do. Kathy Bates (Misery, Dick Tracy, Dolores Claiborne, Titanic, The Waterboy, About Schmidt, Fred Claus) plays the overly worried mother Patricia who fears the letters are doing nothing but holding Holly back from eventually moving on with her life. During her adventures, Holly also meets Daniel Connelly, played by the hilarious and straightforward Harry Connick Jr. (Copycat, Independence Day, Hope Floats, Basic) who works at the bar her mother owns. The friendship that ensues between these two is wonderful. Their chemistry is better than any other two characters in the entire film. This is an unexpected gift to any viewer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this film received below average reviews. Hilary Swank’s whimpering is excessive, and at times did get a little annoying, but come on people she is grieving after losing the love of her life. Lisa Kudrow’s over the top antics are more irritating than comedic, Gerard Butler’s role is a small one, and I never thought I would say this, but this film needed all the Harry Connick Jr. it could get. This is the best role I have even seen him play, and I was amazed and honored to see that he could act in the way that he was portrayed. The romance is there, the comedy is sporadic, the acting is enjoyable, and the writing could be considered the films best aspect. All in all, leaving me to conclude that “P.S. I Love You” is worth seeing.

Hilary Swank is a actress known to take on serious roles such as “Million Dollar Baby” and Boys Don't Cry. When we caught up with the actress at the P.S. I love You Movie premiere, we wanted to know why she chose her latest movie role in a romantic comedy.

We also caught up with the director of the film Richard LaGravenese who also worked with the actress in “Freedom Writers”. LaGravenese revealed to us how he wanted Hilary to show off her goofy side and persuaded her to take on the role in this flick.
