Paula Abdul Insists She's Never Done Drugs in Her Life

Paula Abdul is known for her quirky, often times nonsensical comments during American Idol, which has often led media outlets to assume she was either drinking on the job, or worse.

But according to Paula, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Not only does she say she’s not drunk on live television, but goes on to say she’s never been tipsy.

Paula sat down with ABC News’ Nightline's Cynthia McFadden for an interview that airs Thursday, and not only addresses the false accusations, but denies them.

In the piece, Cynthia asks Paula, “So let me just ask you the question straight up. Absolutely crystal clear you have not abused prescription drugs?”

She also questions Paula on alcohol, to which she responds, “Never. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t like it. It’s not my thing. Spending money on clothes and shoes that’s another thing. No, no, no, no, no. Will not take those drugs. And you can check my medical records there is nothing like that. I was never on Oxycontin or Vicadin or anything like that. I was on nerve medicine and anti-inflammatories.”

But that answer doesn’t keep Cynthia from pressing the issue. She goes on to ask Abdul about her behavior while shooting her 2007 Bravo reality show Hey Paula. Cynthia notes, “There are so many times where you don’t look like you are really there. You’re eyes are closing, you’re head is falling back.”

But Paula attributes that behavior to falling asleep while the camera crews were still at her house. She tells Nightline , “I don’t have anything that is shameful. I don’t have anything to be embarrassed about that was not accurate documentation of my life.”

And speaking of her life now, Paula is consumed with American Idol, as it’s coming closer and closer to crowning the season 8 winner. And despite recent reports that she and co-host Kara DioGuardi are at odds, Paula says the two are close friends.

She says, “Well, I started her success. And I’m proud of it. Happy of it. I moved a stranger from New York, told her to give 2 week’s notice to Billboard magazine, and moved a stranger into my home in LA. I actually think that Simon got mad that we are friends and that I actually knew her and that her humble beginning began sleeping in my guest bedroom and I just believed in her.”

Paula also sounds like she isn’t going anywhere, although there have been conflicting reports that her contract is up after this season. Paula says, “I love the show, I do. I love what I do on the show and I’m loving it more this season than ever. It’s taken me a while to get comfortable in my own skin with the show.”

Guess we can just attribute Paula’s quirkiness to being high on life!
