Finally, a celebrity story focused on the “good” rather than the “negative.” Paul Walker was definitely someone who spent more time being the former, and in his death, a truly heartwarming story of the actor’s surprise gesture for a young couple nearly a decade ago is being shared by fans as a testament to his character.
In a Santa Barbara, California, jewelry store in 2004, Paul overheard Kyle and Kristen Upham shopping for a ring, talking with one another about a piece they couldn’t afford.
That’s when he quietly purchased the $9,000 ring for them and slipped out of the shop without mention.
“It’s still to this day the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me,” Kristen said to CBS Los Angeles.
Almost ten years later, Kristen and Kyle were never 100% sure if it was Paul who purchased the ring for them. The couple had chatted briefly with Paul in the store, but the actor didn’t announce the surprise he had in store for them, so they couldn’t ever confidently say until now, when the jewelry store’s clerk Irene King confirmed it to the media.
“To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable,” Irene said.
Kyle, an Iraqi war vet, had just returned from Iraq and was already preparing for a second tour at the time, which affected the actor. “I remember seeing the look in his face,” Kristen said, when they were talking with Paul in ’04. “He kind of transformed.”
It’s a ring the couple plans to hand down through the generations, Kyle said, along with this story.
