Former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya has opened up about his recent trips to rehab. He's suffering from drug and alcohol addiction and even admitted that he cheated on his wife, Millie Corretjer, though he wants to be clear, he's no Tiger Woods.
I guess people will draw the comparison. A high profile athlete who cheats on his wife will always be compared to Tiger Woods. "Did Oscar pull a Tiger?" "Did he go Tiger on his wife?"
Oscar revealed all in an interview with Univision, "We are obviously not talking a Tiger Woods here, but I was unfaithful," says Oscar.
He and his wife have been separated for a while, though since his retirement from the sport he's been battling drug addiction and thoughts of suicide.
"There were drugs, my drug of choice was cocaine and alcohol. Cocaine was recent. The last 2 years, last 2 1/2 years and I depended more in the alcohol than the cocaine," Oscar admits, "It took me to a place where I felt safe, it took me to a place where I felt as if nobody can say anything to me, it took me to a place where I just can reach out and grab my mom."
Thankfully, he's seeking help and says he's been sober for three months after entering rehab and joining Alcoholics Anonymous.
"Rock Bottom was recently. Within couple of years, just thinking if my life was even worth it. I don't have the strength, I don't have the courage to take my own life but I was thinking about it."
Oscar retired from boxing in 2009 after an embarrassing beat down from Manny Pacquiao in 2008. He did have a successful 16 year career, won Olympic gold in 1992 and claimed 10 world titles at six different weights and was boxing's most popular fighter.
Oscar's last title was in May 2006 and after his loss to Manny Pacquiao at age 36.
For a long time Oscar was known as "The Golden Boy" in professional boxing but has since turned that moniker into the name of his promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions.
Oscar is to appear on Piers Morgan tonight to promote his star fighter, Victor Ortiz's whom Oscar promotes with Golden Boy Promotions. I wonder if Oscar's recent news will overshadow conversation about Victor's fight on the show tonight.
