An “Americal Idol” episode without Ryan Seacrest? Not on your life!

Yesterday, TMZ reported that sources said Seacrest was so ill with a stomach bug that he had to miss the dress rehearsal. We hope it’s not contagious! Vomiting and singing really don’t mix, I’m sure the audience would agree.

Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe took over Seacrest’s duties for the afternoon and was gamely ready to do the show in case the
Not too long ago, Nigel Lythgoe had a 'Booya' moment with Simon Cowell. When ‘X-Factor’ honcho Simon suggested a winner’s sing-off between the winner of his show and the winners of ‘The Voice’ and ‘Idol,’ Nigel responded:

“The problem is the 'Idol' winner will be a star by then.”

Nigel opened up a bit more about the idea at the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Season 9 Los Angeles auditions. Lythgoe told Hollyscoop:

American Idol may have lost Paula, Simon and Kara, but they're getting one big name back--Nigel Lythgoe!

Nigel has reportedly inked a deal with Idol to return to the show as an executive producer.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Nigel will serve as an executive producer on Idol alongside Ken Warwick, who has been running Idol for the past 2 years, creator Simon Fuller and Cecile Frot-Coutaz.

Nigel's surprise departure from the show was followed by Paula's last summer and Simon this year.

So do Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have what it takes to keep the show alive now that our favorite judges are gone? Nigel certainly has his work cut out for him.

Will you continue to watch Idol with the new judges?
Paula Abdul’s contract for American Idol is still up in the air at this point, since show execs haven’t decided whether they’ll double her contract to $20 million.

But in the event Paula doesn’t come back for season 9 of Idol, Nigel Lythgoe has invited her to another very popular show: So You Think You Can Dance.

Nigel told the New York Daily News, "We would certainly consider her as a guest judge. Without question."

As much as we love Paula on Idol, it seems SYTYCD is more up her alley. She is after all, a choreographer before she is a singer. And her dance moves are still pretty much in tact from her “Opposites Attract” days.

And speaking of Nigel, he was once the executive producer of Idol. From his inside perspective, he told TV Guide, "Having spoken with [Fox reality boss] Mike Darnell, I know Fox wants to keep Paula.”

Nigel also said that Paula has a right to be angry after seeing the new contracts Ryan and Simon just scored for $45 million and $144 million, respectively.

Nigel said, "I don't know if they're true, but Paula seeing those figures would make her pretty upset.”

We don’t want to see Paula leave Idol, but So You Think You Can Dance would be a great consolation for her!

There’s a new controversy everyone’s talking about on the set of American Idol, and surprise! It involves money. Simon’s co-workers on the show are a little ticked off after hearing what his paycheck is. Thanks to Forbes, everyone found out Simon earns $36 million a year on the show, and it was even confirmed by executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Only problem is, the other judges aren’t making nearly as much. But Nigel is defending Simon, saying, "There is always jealousy in every job. Why is he getting more than the other two judges? Because it is believed that he brings more to the table. He has actually handled his negotiations quite brilliantly. He’s only ever negotiated by the year. And now he is getting something like $22,000 per minute."

Wow. When you break it down like that, it just doesn’t seem fair. What do you think? Should Simon be making more than the other judges? Should he be making that much money period?!

American Idol is giving back, with the help of some Hollywood heavyweights. We're talking Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Miley Ray Cyrus, Carrie Underwood and that’s just a few names were dropping.

The show will raise awareness and funds to benefit various U.S. and international charities. The show has lined up a list of special performances. When Hollyscoop.com caught up with AI Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe we wanted to know what performance he is looking forward to.

“I think its Robin Williams. But we’re bringing Heart back with Fergie, and I’ve never really seen Heart, because I’m from the U.K. There were a couple of records that were hits over there, but nothing that we really knew about. So they’re so sort of iconic on Idol, because every girl that comes on here wants to sing Alone, or Barracuda or something, and I say, who’s that by, and they say, oh, it’s Heart, it’s Heart. So I’m really delighted that they’re coming on the show.”

Don’t worry all you Idol fanatics, just because it’s a special doesn’t mean you won’t be seeing your favorites. Nigel said you can expect, “You’re going to have the Idols performing live; you’ve got the Idols answering the telephone calls that are coming in live, and hopefully singing – whoever is lucky enough to get through with their donation, they can ask the Idol to sing to them. That’s basically it.”

There you have it folks, the scoop straight from the source. Make sure to tune in this Wednesday April 9, 2008 at 7:30pm ET/PT on FOX.
