Some of Australia’s biggest stars have banded together to help victims in their home country who are victim to the massive bushfires that have left many homeless.
Russell Crowe, Shane Warne, Rove McManus, Kate Ritchie, Megan Gale and glamour couple Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom all united to raise much-needed funds for a telethon last night, raising more than $20 million.
Many stars couldn’t make it back in time for the telethon, like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Hugh Jackman, Rachel Griffiths, Naomi Watts, Anthony LaPaglia and Simon Baker. But they all pre-recorded messages of support that played throughout the night.
Kidman and Urban had even offered to fly to Melbourne from their home in Tennessee to be part of last night's event.
The event was called Australia Unites, and was aimed at raising as much funds as possible to give to the families who are victims of the country’s worst bushfire disaster ever. It’s already claimed the lives of almost 200 people, and left over 1000 without homes.
Channel 9 in Australia was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support by celebrities, saying, "We have been overwhelmed at Channel 9 by the generosity of people wanting to donate money, goods and services to assist Victoria's bushfire victims.
We are humbled by all that and only hope that Australia Unites provides not only some tangible assistance to those in need but also some comfort to those who are grieving by demonstrating solidarity and good old Australian mateship."
It’s so great to see all of these stars stop right in their tracks to pay attention to an important cause. It proves their loyalty to their countrymen over their careers, which is an amazing thing to witness.
