Why Nick Cannon's Kidney Failure Shocked Close Friends

Who knew Nick Cannon was such a health nut? A close friend of Nick's, DJ Irie, says he was shocked to learn that Cannon was hospitalized for what wife Mariah Carey has called "mild kidney failure."

"I was beyond shocked when I learned Nick had a kidney issue," the Miami-based DJ tells People.

"Of all the people, he is healthy beyond belief. He does not drink, he eats healthy, and he works out regularly."

Okay, you got me at "doesn't drink." Because I hear someone doesn’t drink and, even if they eat In-N-Out five times a day, I think, 'Wow, not drinking? What a fitness guru. That must take some willpower.'

"Nick practices all of these healthy habits every day of his life," Irie continued. "But he is rational and smart and taking care of it by being in the hospital where he belongs now."

Indeed, this week, Nick was transferred from an Aspen hospital to a hospital in Los Angeles, Tweeting from the hospital bed.

"Thank you all for all your love, prayers and concern. You know me… I will be a’ight," Nick wrote.

You can take his kidneys, but world be damned if you try to take away a man's Twitter.

Carey told PEOPLE that although Nick's condition is stable, he's still "in a a lot of pain."

“We’re trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful," Mariah wrote on her blog.

Get well soon, Nick, and don't stop Tweetin'.
