Slumdog Kids Get New Homes

The kids of Slumdog Millionaire are loving life right now. They got to attend the Oscars on Sunday, then go to Disneyland, and now they are getting new homes!

The Indian government is providing two of the children who live in extreme poverty new homes for their families.

Chairman of the Maharasta Housing and Area Development Authority in Mumbai said that Rubina Ali and Asharuddin Ismall, who play the youngest versions of the main characters, “are special and have won laurels for the country and we want to felicitate them."

"Since the children have made the nation proud, they must be given free houses. The chief minister of the state has approved this. Their families will receive notification in a couple of days."

These won’t be mansions or anything, but they will be a step up from the slums. The new homes are expected to be one-bedroom apartments in the Mumbai suburbs.

In addition to the new homes, Slumdog director Danny Boyle has set up trusts for the children that they will be able to access once they graduate from school, and he will be paying for their education. So the fact that Boyle was under fire for “exploiting” these kids sounds ridiculous.

We’re so glad these kids are getting the recognition and help they need, because they were a part of making the film so amazing!
