Miss California Sparks Controversy Over Same-Sex Marriage Question

April 20, 2009

The Miss USA pageant aired on television last night, and Miss North Carolina was named the winner of it all. So why is everyone only talking about California’s Carrie Prejean? She had an interesting response to her question asked by judge Perez Hilton during the competition.

He asked Carrie: “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not.”

Carrie replied: “Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what? In my country, in my family, I think I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised, and I think it should be between a man and a woman.”

Needless to say, this didn’t sit well not only with Hilton, but with many other people. But Carrie is defending her answer, and spoke with Access Hollywood about it today.

She told them, “It is a very touchy subject and he is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct. But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.”

Carrie also feels that her answer was the reason she ended up losing to Miss North Carolina. She says, “It did cost me my crown. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do.”

What do you think about Miss California’s honest answer? Should she have altered it to be more politically correct?

Caught this last night on CNN- Larry King, what with the national & worldwide spectacle made here & how things & postures have turned, I'd say the signs have arrived that Carrie is likely busy with lawyers planning the reverse all out crap down! This show was poor journalism (the spot journalism God-Satan sound bit couldn't have made CNN's anger of the no show any clearer, too bad, what of journalistic integrity? The show featured several panel members who need to tend to their own currently torn existence rather than bringing others down. The one 'smart' gal kept her trap shut. Have so many people lost touch with reality here? Larry, you have to ask if this is a liberty question? Liberty's been thrown in a ditch & they've tossed her a shovel! Of course it is, both side are within their rights to have their position here. Slander, defamation, persecution and the like are another issue though. Such complete hypocrisy has no place in America. The world is watching so closely here to further validate, verify & justify what 's been said by so many worldwide along the lines of the American trash heap, to put it nicely. In a time of need for healing & renewal this type of hypocritical thinking, acting out, disease & destruction has no place. As the old saying goes, to those that bring hell are sure to receive it. Talk about your soap operatic kingdom comes! Afraid this is it & it's on! And the band played 'Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...." Joe in Chicago

She stated what was the way that she was raised. Until recently, this has been the view of all religions, that homosexuality is bad.

As she explained at the pageant and on the "Today" show, she just stated what was the way that her parents and her religious teachers had raised her. (Incidently, until very recently, this has been the view of all religions, that homosexuality is very bad.) I thought that one of the hallmarks of our country is that there is freedom of religion, and that therefore, a person cannot be discriminated against because of his or her religious beliefs. Yet Miss Prejean was denied the Miss USA title because of her opposition to same gender so-called marriage. This shows that this gay-rights business has really very little to do with any kind of "rights." Rather, it is a ploy to force people to break their moral/religious values to fully accept these homosexual perversions!

I Love her! She should have won!

Her answer was an intelligent one. She is smarter than the people who bashed her.

It's time someone reminded people of what the "norm" is in American, even in the 21th Century The National Health & Social Life Survey reported that 2.8% of males and 1.4% of females are homosexuals. CBS News reported that only 33% of Americans would vote for same-sex marriage. The Pew Research organization reported in August 2007 that 55% of Americans would vote "no" to same-sex marriage. They reported that 36% of Americans would vote "yes" First, Miss California's values and views are shared by a VAST MAJORITY of Americans. Second, Perez Hilton, as he has done before, sensensualized his own social and political agenda on national TV. In the aftermath he insulted the lady by calling her a "dumb bitch" Third, let Mr. Hilton call for a referendum to change the Constitution. Let's see what the popular vote ! I say Miss California's answer was very appropriate and appreciated by most Americans The scandal lies with Mr. Hilton

She said what she believes, didn't say what she thought they wanted to hear. I think that's the kind of person that we need representing the U.S.A.!Kudos to her, I hate that she was shuned for it, but sometimes when u say things that people don't wanna hear, that's what happens!

she is a victim of a reverse discrimination, just bec. she does not agree and condone a same sex marriage she is punished and ostracized. she is not a bigot, she is a victim of a morallly bankrupt society.
8:35AM 04/21/09 girly987
uh.. michael? she's a bigot because she was raised and has specific beliefs and isnt going to stand there and lie about it? Did you miss the part where she pretty much said you can choose either? If seh wants to choose one she has every right to.. you seem awfully close finded for trying to seem to be the opposite.
6:19AM 04/21/09 Michael1
...she is a bigot...if her rights were taken away from her just because of her "God given sexual orientation" it would have been a different speech.
1:29AM 04/21/09 lasperets
She replied in the most honest and respectful way a Christian could express their own opinion. From now on it's going to be a torture to see this Perez Hilton guy on TV. He ruins all the shows with his judgement and advertising his own beliefs and lifestyle. I don't think I stomach ever seeing him again after what he did to that brave young lady.
10:30PM 04/20/09 KateMunroe
While I disagree with her, she's completely in her right to state what she actually believes in and isn't bullshiting just to win.
6:47PM 04/20/09 LucyLove
She answered honestly and was true to herself and her beliefs. Kudos to her for being able to say that! And she is right, that is what cost her her crown, but why would we want a liar for Miss USA? :)
4:33PM 04/20/09 dwaggin
It was an unfair question in today's bigoted America, BUT it is about time folks stopped trying to impose their beliefs on others. I'm not gay; I couldn't care less what two (or more)consenting adults do. Freedom shouldn't be limited by bigotry if exercising that freedom hurts no one else.
4:32PM 04/20/09 girly987
It's great that she's open minded and doesnt condemn homosexuals like most people do, i love that she stood up for her beliefs and didnt bs anyone just for a stupid crown.. if miss usa is suppose to be a role model, she is def that. This girl has my respect.. :)
4:18PM 04/20/09 moose1
Kudos to her for standing on the beliefs of a woman and man being married. I'm so sick about these gay people wanting the right to marry. And these states and countries allowing it will stand before the God almighty for this sin!
4:17PM 04/20/09 Sassmaster
Go her for stating her real opinon..she shouldnt get judged for that she wasnt offensive with it.
4:10PM 04/20/09 coolguy
great answer...she should have won for not bullshitting.
