The California Supreme Court today upheld Proposition 8's ban on same-sex marriage, but also ruled that the 18,000 gay couples that wed before the November election will continue to be married under state law.
Crowds gathered outside the California Supreme Court in San Francisco today to hear the decision, which was sure to be controversial no matter which way it swayed. Proposition 8 passed with 52% of the vote during the November 2008 elections.
The issue is far from over though, Gay rights activists say they may ask voters to repeal the marriage ban as early as next year, while opponents say they will fight the effort.
A number of celebrities have come forward supporting prop 8 including
Ellen Degeneres, Brad Pitt, Hilary Duff, governator
Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Google!
Pete Wentz recently said, "There are a lot of causes out there — a lot of 'good' fights to be fought. I think proposition 8 is pretty lame — as many others do too. It's f**king lame."
In 2008,
Brad Pitt donated $100,000 of his own money to fight prop 8, and expressed his disappointment when it passed by 52%.
