So, “How I Met Your Mother” came to a close after NINE SEASONS last night.

Apparently most fans are OUTRAGED with how it ended and a small minority are crying tears of perfect joy.

As someone who's only seen like, three episodes of the show in passing in a doctor's office, I can’t understand why you are all freaking out over the finale.

After a careful Google investigation, let me (a non-fan) explain to other non-fans what happened last night and WHY everyone is so pissed off about it. There are probably spoilers, but who really knows.

So, last season, lead character Ted Mosby finally met “the mother.”

Tumblr

Her yellow umbrella is apparently super significant. I don’t know.

Tumblr

The mother’s name is Tracy and apparently she is the perfect woman for Ted, because the writers wrote her to be perfect for Ted.

Tumblr

Ted proposes to her at some point.

Tumblr

They have a baby, and then get married, and then have another kid.

Tumblr

All this happens in the last episode. I think…probably, hmmm. Either way, too much stuff happened and everyone’s mad about it.

Then, they jump forward about 10 years and NOW TRACY IS DYING!

CBS

WHAT THE HELL!?

The general consensus regarding her death was:

Also in the future, Barney and Robin get divorced.

CBS

Despite the fact that they apparently dedicated the entire last season to their impending wedding.

CBS

Fans are pretty outraged about that as well.

So, now that Ted’s wife AKA THE MOTHER has passed away…and Robin is single…Ted decides to get with her.

CBS

Fans were mad at Ted for that too.

Did we mention that Robin is Ted's ex and apparently his ONE TRUE LOVE?

Who’s symbolically represented by a blue horn, or whatever this instrument is?

CBS

The whole show was blue horns versus yellow umbrellas. Basically Robin vs. Tracy.

Fans seem to be PRO Yellow Umbrella.

But the writers were rooting for Blue Horn, so...time to kill off the mother AND GET WITH ROBIN!

Basically, people were NOT cool with the whole Ted-ends-up-with-Robin thing.

Fans are even going so far as to drag HARRY POTTER into the mix.

Now the Internet is scrambling to make sense of it.

Yes, trying to make sense of a half-hour sitcom that apparently got too complex for its own fan base.

The few satisfied fans are making memes to explain the concepts of “fate” and “timing” to the angry fans that didn’t want Ted and Robin to end up together.

Twitter

Even the marketing team for the show was forced to EXPLAIN to fans why these two ended up together.

Twitter

The takeaway here is…why does everyone find Ted’s love story so unbelievable when everyone is overlooking the fact that these five people HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR NINE YEARS!

CBS

Ain’t nobody gonna hang out with the same people for that long!
