Green Day Working on American Idiot Musical

Green Day is heading to the stage, but not in the conventional sense of the word when it comes to musicians.

The group is currently working on a musical adaptation of their album American Idiot.

The show is based on the album which follows disaffected contemporary American Everykid Jesus of Suburbia as he morphs into violent, drug-dealing alter-ego St. Jimmy and falls for anarchist girlfriend Whatsername.

Co-produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day, American Idiot sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and won Grammy Awards for rock album and record of the year.

It’s been compared to classic rock opera/concept albums such as the Who's Tommy, which was turned into a Broadway hit in 1993; and Pink Floyd's The Wall, also in development as a stage musical for the Weinstein Co.

The show will debut during the 2009-10 season at the Berkely Repertory Theater.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong tells the New York Times, "It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that’s what I love about it. When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream."

We love this idea! Tommy is one of greatest Broadway shows ever, and we think American Idiot will definitely hold up against some of the great rock operas.
