Cat Stevens Accusing Coldplay of Plagiarism

Uh-oh. Coldplay is being accused of plagiarism again! Now the veteran singer, Yusef Islam, previously known as Cat Stevens, alleges the band ripped off one of his songs. And funny enough, it’s the same song Joe Satriani accused them of stealing—Viva la Vida.

Cat Stevens claims his 1970s track Foreigner Suite is the basis of Coldplay’s Viva la Vida.. “There’s been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani, but, if you listen to it, it’s mine! It’s the Foreigner Suite, it is!”

This is very reminiscent of Joe Satriani’s claims. He claims it incorporates “substantial original portions” of his song and is seeking “any and all profits” from the track.

Islam claims the alleged similarity occurs roughly 14 minutes and 33 seconds into the 18-minute song. But what’s interesting is that Islam used one of Coldplay’s production team for his new album Roadsinger.

Why would he come out of the woodwork about this now? Cat Stevens’ Foreigner Suite off the album Gold came out years ago. No word on whether he’s going to sue, but check out the video below of the excerpt of Cat Steven’s Foreigner Suite. Notice any similarities? Hint, hint…skip to 5:30.

the album that 'foreigner suite' comes off of is not gold, which is a greatest hit album, it is from the album 'foreigner'

Coldplay need to take time out to figure out what making original music is.
