'This Is It' Film Reviews

Michael Jackson
The world premiere of This Is It from the Regal Cinemas at LA Live was a star-studded event, with Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Neil Patrick Harris, Paula Abdul, Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ashley Tisdale all in attendance to show their support for the King of Pop.

But we wanted to know what the critics thought of the film that features real footage of Michael Jackson rehearsing for what would have been his final tour. The movie comes out worldwide today, and here’s what some of the top critics are saying about the film.

Richard Corliss, Time: “So what is This Is It? A concert film without the concert. A backstage musical that takes place almost entirely onstage. A no-warts hagiography that still gets the audience closer to the real Michael Jackson — MJ the performer, that is — than anything in the man’s avidly documented history. Wisely and decently ignoring the circumstances of his death and the circus that followed it, Ortega focuses on the re-creation of about a dozen Jackson standards for the concert.”

Owen Gleiberman, EW: “This Is It is not in any way ghoulish. It has now been established that when Jackson died, he was, physically speaking, a relatively healthy man. And so we’re spared the macabre spectacle of combing the movie for any literal signs that he was knocking at death’s door. It should also be said, though, that in This Is It, Jackson shows no telltale signs of a broken spirit, either. From the moment he takes the stage, he’s loose, robust, and in control.”

Lou Loumenick, New York Post: “Neither a concert film nor a documentary but a ghoulish “event” offered just in time for Halloween, “This is It” is sadly — and reprehensively, if you ask me — the movie equivalent to the National Enquirer’s infamous post-mortem shot of Elvis Presley.”

Elysa Gardner, USA Today: “Let’s be honest, though: That’s not what most of us expected from This Is It , which opens wide today. The Jackson who shook off his mortal coil on June 25 wasn’t the vibrant young performer who regularly electrified stadiums, and hadn’t been for many years.”

Leah Rozen, People: “Ardent fans will be happy to gaze at their idol in action; moviegoers hoping to understand more fully who Jackson was and what made him tick, besides performing, won’t find answers here.”

Andrew Pulver, Guardian: “The big fear, though, was that fulsome homages to the man and his talent would smother This Is It in a coating of treacle; thankfully, Ortega limits it to the occasional sobbing outburst from the dancers or choreographers. We are instead offered genuinely interesting tidbits of Jackson’s stagecraft, in the shape of intense discussion of cues, cherry-pickers and trapdoors – presumably to demonstrate how hands-on he was.”

The Mirror: “Michael Jackson fans will be desperate to see this musical documentary, drawn from more than 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage as Jackson prepared for his comeback shows. No advance screenings were sent to media - though the trailer does offer tantalising raw footage of dance routines, songs and spectacle. But love him or loathe him, there is no denying Jackson was a remarkable performer and this looks like it will be a fascinating and probably moving epitaph.”

Wow I see all these sites where people are saying they think Michael is still alive and I get so excited. I think some people would be mad, I would not at all.. I am no Michael hater I love him so much! My husband bursts my bubble and says no hes dead hes dead hes dead. There is a part of me that says my husband is just I dont know... I want Michael to be alive, he is so sweet and pure and I am so sick of people saying he loves little boys... He is a little boy, he has common ground with them... He is like Peter Pan.. There is something so sweet about that, NOT PERVERTED!!!! I went one sight and they were bashing him about his poem. I love it, and he did not mean he wants to kiss the children.. I have on my eyepod.. He is a big kid with a huge heart. Look into his eyes, he is not gay! He is not a pervert he is an honorable yet extremely vulnerable man. I get in huge fights with people because they think that he is guilty of the alligations and I just let them have it.. Friends anyone... Michael's hot and awesome. The media were the ones talking about his poem and I wanted to jump through my computer and get a little BAD on em! Poor Michael people need to just leave him ALONE! Love you Michael!!! You are soooo missed!

I thought the movie was amazing. I love how Michael Jackson redid Thriller, wow.. What a mind blower. I have my preservasions on this being M.J. throughout the movie. The man that wore the sunglasses, he did not seem to me to be the realk Michael Jackson. Maybe I am being over the top, but something inside makes me wonder if Michael was harmed in some way. He was healthy he ate he was lloking forward to 10 of his concerts. Baseing that on one night the sweet man with his sweet little disposition.. I can picture him and his sweetness going on and smileing saying sweet this is going to be amazing I will do 10 concerts finances will be looking up.. Excited that he would get to do what he loves for the people he loves most, his babies. Sleep was probabbly really good thinking, I have a way to get back in the saddle.. Dah, wake up to find out you got 50 more to go.. Now I think that was terrible and wrong. WHy did A.E.G. not give him the option of taking his time.. They could have called it the 10 at a time tour.. He was 50, come on what the heck did these people expect from Michael J? He was the most amazing singer/actor-producer himself there will never be anyone better not ever.. Nobody could even come close to comparing to the brilliance that is him, MICAEL JACKSON. Did A.E.G. have some sort of plot with greedy fingers dipping into his cash that they had some wrong doings to our Michael? I want to know what really happened. He looked happy at times and then other times he looked tired whereas other times the man looked downright frightened. I am not saying that the one who portrayed him, but he was not Michael. He dont wear glasses and why did they both have the mic. in the left ear? What really happened to our Icon? I am glad I watched the movie as I felt close to him but as the hours drift by after seeing it I want answers and I feel America does to. A,E,G. to you people was he worth more dead than alive? He had children and a family who loves him. I am not buying that he was some kind of drug addict.. I believe he took drugs as does anyone for pain. We can not even begin to imagine the torture he indured again he was guilty of being one awesome man and some sick parents using there children to say he molested them.. Come on, he would never hurt a flea his sweet innocent smile his sweet nature. Nope sell it someplace else I am not buying it. I smell a big fish and I know I am not the only one. Michael was a human and nobody treated him as such. People went after the pockets.. It hurts and I cry a lot because, honestly when did the man have happieness? I am so thankful he had his babies because that was his motivation to go on. Those kids were the best thing that could ever have happened to him ever. I really dont think he would so careless as to do the dope to escape, if not for his babies, I might buy it but nope, I dont cause his children they meant everything to him. I have said my peice A.E.G. from what I see you are greedy money hungry and heartless. The only reason that I would purchase anything you got to sale is for those angels and there grandma knowing that it would help them.. I hope each and everyone of you are haunte and your sleep is so interupted that propofol becomes your only means of sleep and or your way of life. I am appauled that you are so heartless. What really happened to M.J.? Your greed? Your hunger for money and the attitude that he was worth more dead than alive? Guess what you are gonna have to answer to God each and everyone of you.... Goodluck! May the money you make be the tool that haunts you people for eternity! You disgust me. I agree you rushed this doing it only for 2 weeks and boom you are done. My thought is Micahel the perfectionist he is was this up to par for him and would this have made him proud? I am so sad and all I want to do is cry M.J. did not deserve this foul play! You people had a hand in his demise! God help you people your conciouns.. God knowas what happend and you cant run from him.. Good luck with that. M.J. lives forever our angel. Our one and only in a lifetime. Elvis was great but M.J. was greater! I miss him soooooooo much! Oh and you perverts who spread vicious lies about M.J. doing nasty things to children, you people get to answer to God over that issue as well, I hope your nights are filled with the horrors you put our icon through.. Goodluck with your twisted lieng deceitful trashy lives you all make me sick.. You are disgusting people.. A.E.G. Making Michael think 10 concerts, that would have been nothing for him to accomplish, but for you people to decide while he slept he would do 50.. you are nasty you are dirty and you make me SICK!!!!! I pray that God blows this wide open and Michael is vindicated and his children are able to understand what you people did to there daddy. Preasure that is all everyone did to him outside his immediate family and his 3 angels he l

I saw it at the Las Vegas premiere. As a fan, it was fascinating and entertaining to watch his interactions while also leaving me feel short-changed since they had 100+ hours of footage to edit through. As a filmmaker, it is obvious the people in the editing room are NOT filmmmakers (if they are, they should be ashamed). This could have been a really amazing concert film IF it had been done right. And as meticulously a perfectionist MJ was, it SHOULD have been. Instead of rushing to get it in theaters so the DVD could be on shelves for Christmas sales, AEG should have taken more care to get this done the MJ way.
