Peter Jackson is bringing us back to Middle-earth. Lord of the Rings fans have been waiting for this.
The first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released, and its about as action-packed and intriguing as you can expect. Starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, the movie also includes Elijah Wood and Iak McKellen. Excuse me, Sir Ian McKellen.
Here are a few key things to look out for in the trailer.
The 13 Dwarves: Don’t get so Hobbit-crazed that you overlook the dwarves. They are key to the story in The Hobbit. While J.R.R. Tolkien’s dwarves were more childlike, Jackson has given them a darker feel, right in line with the Lord of the Rings franchise.
The White Council: Jackson adds the story of The White Council to The Hobbit. As detailed in the books, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves during a trip to Lonely Mountain to fight an unknown enemy.
The Return of Gollum: He’s as creepy as ever. At the end of the trailer, Bilbo speaks to someone in the dark crevices of a cave. Turns out, it’s our old friend Gollum, and yes, he says “precious.”
The movie is currently in production, with filming set to end March 2012. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to be released December 2012.
Of Freeman’s recruitment for the role of Bilbo, Jackson said:
"There has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us. There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin Freeman. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave.”
