Ron Artest Changing His Name to Metta World Peace
Because he’s such a calm guy, Ron Artest has decided to change his name to “Metta World Peace”. It’s kind of like Arnold Schwarzenegger changing his name to “Celibate Virgin”.

LA Lakers spokesman John Black said:

“My understanding is ‘Metta’ will be his first name and ‘World Peace’ will be his last. Metta is an early Buddhist word, with various definitions along the lines of kindness or goodwill.”

The NBA player is known for beating the crap out of a Detroit Pistons fan who threw a beer at him during a timeout. In this past season’s playoffs, Artest also clothes lined point guard JJ Barea.

The name change won’t happen until August, because that’s the earliest time Artest can get in front of a judge. He says the reason for the change is due to “personal reasons.” His hearing is scheduled for August 26, and apparently, if there’s anyone who objects to the change, they can, up until two days before the hearing.

Despite the controversy surrounding his temper, Artest is an activist in various issues. In 2008, he appeared in a PETA campaign titled, “Have the balls to spay or neuter your dog.” He’s also involved in mental health awareness, donating a great deal of his salary to related charities.
