July 4th Tradition – Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest!
Every year American’s stuff their face on July 4th. Hot dogs, potato salad, burgers, beer, it’s like a garbage disposal variety of food but on the Fourth of July, anything goes.

But for some competitive eaters, only one type of food will do the trick. Hot dogs.

The 97th annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in Brooklyn is as synonymous with Independence day as fireworks and barbecues.

This year, reining champ Joey Chestnut won his sixth straight hot dog eating contest.

The San Jose man known as “Jaws” threw back 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, he takes home $10,000 and a mustard-yellow champion’s belt.

“It feels great to get the win, but I’m a little bummed I didn’t get to 70,” says Chestnut.

In order to get the win, Joey and the rest of the competitors dunk their hot dog and bun in water before taking a few bites and swallowing. No mustard, ketchup, or chili on these dogs.

This was his personal best and now he holds the record, tying with his former rival Takeru Kobayashi who was banned from the competition because he refused to do endorsements for the MLE (Major League Eating). Yes, the MLE is a real thing.

In the women’s competition, Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas is the women’s champ. She ate 45 hot dogs to win the competition.

“I’m going to be 45, so I wanted to eat my age,” says Sonya matter-of-fact.

That's going to be one heck of a stomach ache later.
