It's no secret that Miley Cyrus has a big heart and loves dogs as evidenced by headlines about her recent animal adoptions.
The "Can't Be Tamed" singer has been tweeting up a storm, sharing photos and thoughts with her fans about her pups and how her furry family has now grown from three members to five.
Unfortunately, for Cyrus, that’s two too many.
According to Los Angeles Animal Services, residents of Los Angeles County where the singer lives are only allowed up to three dogs at a time, putting Miley in violation of the ordinance if she keeps her recent additions.
“You are allowed 3 dogs and 3 cats in the City of Los Angeles unless you have a kennel permit,” a rep for LA Animal Services told Hollyscoop.
Maybe Miley has a kennel permit? We hope so.
The Los Angeles County Animal Code clearly states that "Up to three dogs may be kept at any residence without an animal facility license, provided the dogs' owner or custodian licenses each individual dog and complies with the Mandatory Spay and Neuter Program for Dogs."
The consequences for breaking the code range from fines to possible jail time.
A first violation is considered an infraction, punishable by a fine not to exceed $250. If the owner fails to correct the underlying cause of the violation within 30 days after being notified, it becomes a second violation - a misdemeanor - punishable by up to six months in jail or a fine not to exceed $1,000, or both.
Miley also has 15 days from the date she took in her new pups to get them licensed or find them new homes or she can add another violation to the list.
Mary-Jane is the fifth dog for Cyrus. She was adopted from a rescue just two weeks after the starlet picked up number four, Happy, from a box in a WalMart parking lot.
Before the recent additions to her barking brood, Cyrus was already the proud mama to three other pooches - Lila, Floyd and Ziggy.
Miley tweeted back in January that Ziggy was a birthday gift to Liam so technically, that leaves Miley with only four dogs. Still, over the limit.
Apparently when you have that many dogs, you walk them in shifts. According to People magazine, Cyrus was spotted with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth walking two of the five in Studio City.
Fans have been keeping up with Miley’s canine happenings on Twitter, where the 19-year-old has taken up an obsessive compulsion of posting her animal photos.
“As all my dogs jumped on my face the first words out of my mouth this morning...'I am living my dream life,'" Miley tweeted.
Paris Hilton had that same dream, and hers ended in an investigation by Los Angeles Animal Services.. According to The Daily Mail, the agency conducted an investigation on Hilton in 2008 after she said she had 17 dogs on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Fortunately for Cyrus, if there are no complaints, there’s really nothing Animal Services can do.
“We often do not know if a person has more pets unless the neighbors report them to the Department, which happens if the reporting party feels that the animals are not getting proper care or if they are creating a nuisance,” said the Animal Services rep.
So, as long as the pups are happy (and quiet), Miley can keep living her sneaky dream and saving doggy lives.
Attempts to reach a rep for Miley or Liam for comment about what the future holds for Happy and Mary-Jane have been unsuccessful.
