Annie Leibovitz: Miley Portrait Is Beautiful

Miley Cyrus
There's been so much hype about the Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair photos, no one stopped to ask what the photographer had to say about the shoot. Annie Leibovitz is defending her work, saying the Miley photos have been misinterpreted. She released the following statement:

"I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful."

So now that we have everyone weighing in on the pics, what are your thoughts? Are the photos of Miley classy and artistic, or inappropriate given her age?

personally I find nothing wrong with this photo. It's not showing anything wrong. She looks gorgous and classy. It's art not a porn picture. People really need to get with the time it's the 21st century.

I say it to be classy for the name of artistic value, and for her sake, but lets just say 15 may still be too young if she was 17 then it would be better at that age. Right now the young generation is looking at her and she should pay attention to her crowd and not of those that try to make her more than she can be at that age. Miley be carteful and enjoy your age.

Why cant kids just be kids these days? I'd be pissed if that was my 15yr old sister doing that. 21st century my butt. Next its gonne be 11yr olds topless in magazines. There are other ways to sell besides sex. She's done it so far without being a whore. My question is, did her dad concent to this photo shoot? They are the ones responsible for her.

Thanks for the Taliban for checking in, Laurel.

People are mad because this kid is supposed to be a role model for the 5-12 fan base, and frankly her claim that she didn't understand what it would be construed as is baloney. Her parents were on set with her. People are also mad because once again, it's got to be all about the nudity and sexuality. This picture, coupled with Miley pulling down her shirt to reveal a green bra last week, doesn't demonstrate a young woman who has the morals or constraint she claims she has. I teach fifteen year olds. The kids are growing up way too fast and are shocked by nothing. That's a dangerous way we're heading. What I find also find interesting is that they never photograph teen boys wearing bedsheets or in their underwear for magazine covers.

I don't agree with Laurel's comment, either, but what does the Taliban have to do with anything?

I think nothing is wrong with that photo. She is not showing anything bad. She probably has a bikini under it!

Emily, the Taliban are muslim's in Afghanistan that beat and even kill women for not properly covering their bodies from head to toes. Sometimes during major soccer games they are stoned to death or shot in the head. So, Eric's comments seem out of touch with the reality of raising a girl to be confident in who she is, NOT how to be a sex symbol as a source of confidence. He likely does not have a daughter. Unfortunately, this photo is a reflection of where our society is these days. A girl so young SHOULD have more time to be just a kid! This photo give's the immediate impression of a tramp. The photo is dark, her eyeliner, messed up hair, and lipstick give the "impression" she JUST had sex. Her skinny back and ribs showing also send the wrong message to young girls of what "beauty" is. My sentiments mirror the majority of phone calls I've heard on the radio in the past 1/2 hour on this topic. Many fear she is being exploited by her dad, and being groomed to become the next Brittany. It's all about $$.

Emily, I meant to say Tiffany... Sorry.

I think this is well not that much of a surprise. Miley's great, and I am a fan of her's. However, she's not the only one you has been doing this, if I may remind. It's all also of what they show these days on television. All these sex movies, music videos, etc. Have you all seen those retarded videos on YOUTUBE? It's not right. Kids watch these stuff all the time. I heard two eight-years olds discussing a lesbian sex tape they saw on Youtube. It also comes from the parents. Once fame hits you, there's no stopping. You enjoy all the wonderful hospitatilty stores, hotels, anyone or anything around you. Personally, I think websites such as Youtube and Myspace should be banned. I know this girl, who has a first grader brother, and he has his own Myspace. It's just wrong. All anyone thinks of is being cool. Some girls think that stripping their clothes off and showing they boobs and asses make them get boys. Boys think that getting drunk with get girls. Well, you just get into trouble, and you won't be dating the rest of your life, so you could kiss it goodbye. I just think, if celebs do a photoshoot, do something that's appropiate for your age.

As I do not agree of how Miley is protrayed here and how she has conducted herself as a role model. I however have to point out that at least she is cover with a sheet unlike Daniel Radicliff who has been seen full frontal and naked on Broadway.

Randy, I don't know if you thought I was stupid or what. I am fully aware of what the Taliban is but I am unable to see a connection between them and a controversial picture of Miley Cyrus. I know, hard to believe even after your educational post. Anyways, I do not look at this picture and think she just had sex. It looks more mysterious than that--almost ghost-like. And I also don't think she is portraying a negative image of beauty. She looks healthy. We are so used to either seeing stick-thin people or morbidly obese people in the country, it is nice to see a healthy role model. And people need to stop acting like she is 8. She is 15 and although she is still a child, she is not that young.

miley is great! right now she has a great family that supports her!

Well I have a 15 year old and although the picture is beautiful I would hope my daughter would not short herself by letting sick perverts gawk at her and give them satisfaction. She already has money she does'nt have to do that! I guess I am more dissappointed in her parents then anyone she is still a child weather she thinks she is grown she is'nt yet!!!!!
