Michael Phelps can go back to being a dolphin!

His swimming suspension has ended after being banned from competition for three months. Phelps is getting right back into the game with his first competition since the Olympics in Beijing.

He’ll be swimming at this weekend’s UltraSwim in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Phelps tells the Associated Press, "I'm happy to be back in the water and be back in semi-shape. I'm sort of getting back into racing shape and getting ready to race my first race since Beijing. We'll see how it goes."

We’re sure these months off will slow his pace down a little, but Michael will probably blow by tons of swimmers who have been training the entire time!

According to insiders, Michael has lost 20 lbs. of post-Beijing weight, and has been back into a six-day-a-week training regimen. Phelps says, “I’m happy to have some structure back in my life.”

And get ready to see a lot more of Phelps because he’s now changed his retirement plans and will be competing in the 2012 Olympics in London.
Michael Phelps is set to do his first televised interview since the incident in which he was photographed smoking from a bong.

The Olympic medalist will sit down with Matt Lauer for a one-on-one that will air Friday March 13th during the Today Show, and again on Sunday March 15th on Dateline.

During the interview, Matt asks Phelps if he was smoking marijuana, and he replies, “It was a bad mistake. I mean, we all know what… you and I are talking about. It’s a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment. And it’s something that… I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake.”

Phelps also speaks out about his alleged “friends” he was with who took the picture, that later ended up on News Of The World. He says, “You know, it’s funny at times. Take a picture with a cell phone… I’ll say that there are a lot of people out there who want to take advantage of any situation they have. I trusted my friends who were there about who they were. And clearly they weren’t trusted people… Sometimes you learn the hard way.”

Michael really does seem like he’s repentant about the incident. He tells Matt, “The people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends. The close people around me. And most importantly, the fans. And… I realize that that hurt a lot of people.”

As for the numerous contracts he’s now lost, Phelps says it’s less about the money than people think. He says, “It’s not about money to me. The contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed. But, you know, I think the biggest thing is — is who I hurt the most. Like, if I lost money, OK. It’s not an issue with me.”

That’s because he already has tons of cash! But it’s good to hear him speak out and sound like he knows he did something wrong as a role model and Olympic athlete. Tune in tomorrow and Sunday for the entire interview on Today and Dateline.

Michael Phelps “made a big mistake but at the same time people make mistakes and he apologized and now you have to move on with it and look toward the future.” said fellow Olympian Natasia Liukin.

Hollyscoop.com spoke exclusively with the gold medal gymnast while backstage at Max Azria during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week where she also told us “people still need to remember what a great job ‘Phelps’ did for us at the 2008 Olympics and winning all the Gold Medals.”

As a USA teammate Natasia says, “we all know each other and have met each other several times so it’s always hard to see people make mistakes and then be hurt by them.”

But don’t expect this Olympian to follow in Michael’s big footsteps; she plans to stay as good as gold. “I never attend parties. I am a very low-key kind of girl. I like to be with family and friends at home.” Natasia says.

In fact she spent Valentine’s Day “at a national training camp, in the middle of nowhere,” as she begins to get ready for the world championships in London, this October.

“Other than that I started school at SMU Dallas. I am taking a Psychology and Philosophy classes. So… training, traveling, going to school, and keeping up appearances” will help make sure Natasia remains out of the tabloids.

In other Phelps news, he is officially in the clear! Despite the scare tactics, he won’t be arrested in what’s become known as “Bong-gate.” Sheriff Leon Lott, who has been investigating the case, released a statement today saying he was not going further with it.

He said, "Having thoroughly investigated this matter, we do not believe we have enough evidence to prosecute anyone that was present at the November party. Michael Phelps and I agree that something positive needs to come from this incident and that is a message of not using drugs.”

Finally some good news for Phelps! This kid has been put through the ringer the last few weeks based on the pic News Of The World ran of him smoking from a bong.

For the entire press release by Sheriff Lott, click here. Is it just us, or does it seem like Lott is trying for his 15 minutes of fame? Next thing we know Michael Phelps will sign a deal to become the face of DARE!

Forget Kellogg's, Michael Phelps can make all his endorsement money back just by giving interviews!

According to reports, media outlets are battling for the first Phelps interview post his bong scandal. Every major network has reportedly put in an offer to score the first interview, but Phelps is still hesitant.

"Everybody wants him on to explain why he was smoking marijuana," said a source. "Oprah Winfrey, ABC, CBS, NBC - everyone wants him."

While we think he should ultimately grant the interview to NBC, since that's where the Olympics were aired last summer, he should also consider going with ABC and Barbara Walters.

All he has to do is go on Barbara Walters, apologize, shed a few tears and all will be forgiven. It's just the way the game works.

Meanwhile, Hollyscoop caught up with some stars to get their feedback on Michael Phelps' controversial photo and the repercussions he faced. Here's what they had to say:

AnnaLynne McCord:
It's an interesting dynamic because you have people around the country who do that stuff all the time and no one gives a crap about it and then you have someone who has done incredible things with themselves, who was caught in one photo, but I know being in the public eye that when I walk out the door, people may have cameras, so if you're going to do those sorts of things you just have to be aware of it and there are repercussions for the choices you make.

Tila Tequila:
A lot of people do what they do, But I think you should be responsible, you know your a role model to kids, I should know cause I'm a role model. Kate Moss made something out of it, so hopefully he can.

Robert Buckley:
I think that sends a message to the rest of Kellogg’s people that they have to walk the straight and narrow.

Chandra Wilson:
Well I guess they had to make their point, but it's not like it's something that happened the other day, it was a while back and you can't deny his accomplishments. The fact that he won all those medals and he did it on sheer talent, they have to do what they have to do but it doesn’t take away from what he did.

Guess Subway will have to go back to just using Jared again to sell their sandwiches. Just a day after Michael Phelps was dropped by Kellogg as a sponsor, Subway has pulled out too. No more $5 footlongs for Mikey!

Prior to the little pot-smoking incident, Michael was featured on Subway.com. But ever since the company has pulled all the links to Michael off their site.

We think this was a huge mistake! Stoners love Subway! They could have really run with this marketing idea!

In an e-mail from Subway spokeswoman Megan Driscoll, she said: “Subway is not commenting or releasing a statement right now on Michael Phelps.”

But insiders say Subway execs are “pissed off, talking to legal, want their endorsement money returned — and to get rid of this embarrassment.”

A little harsh, no? Remember, the guy brought home 8 gold medals!!! Lighten up people!

UPDATE:
Despite being removed from Subway's website, the sandwich chain just released a statement saying it will not drop Phelps endorsement deal.

"Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior," Megan Driscoll, the rep for Subway, tells Usmagazine.com. "Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans."
The rise and the fall!

Michael Phelps really screwed up by smoking out in front of people and getting photographed because he's been the center of a lot of controversy since the pictures were leaked.

Now, he's got to suffer the consequences. Kellogg's has announced that it is not going to resign Michael Phelps as the spokesperson of the company because of his behavior.

"We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic team," a Kellogg spokeswoman says in a statement. "Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract."

It doesn't end there! Phelps was also suspended from competing and will not receive any financial support from the USA Swimming. The suspension will last for 3 months.

"He feels bad he let anyone down," his rep says. "He's also encouraged by the thousands of comments he's received from his fans and the support from his many sponsors. He intends to work hard to regain everyone's trust."

The good news for dolphin boy is that Visa, Speedo and Omega have decided to stick by him through this tough time.

Do you guys feel like people are overreacting over this whole issue?

Michael Phelps pretty much became the face of the 2008 Summer Olympics. He became a household name in a matter of a couple weeks based on his amazing ability. But it seems Michael has hit a rough patch.

He was photographed smoking out of a bong last week, causing people to wonder if his head was still in the game. And now we hear that he’s contemplating not even competing in the next Olympics.

He tells the Baltimore Sun, “This is a decision of mine that I’m not going to make today and I’m not going to make tomorrow. It’s going to require a lot of time and energy and a lot of thinking for myself - but also talking to [coach Bob Bowman] and talking to my family and just deciding what I want to do.

"But I’m not going to let anything stand in my way. If I decide to walk away, I’ll decide to walk away on my own terms. If it’s now, if it’s four years, who knows. But it is something I need to think about and decide what I want to do.”

This is shocking! He’s only 23! Dara Torres is 41, and competed in last summer’s Olympics, and did great! This fame thing may be going to his head a little.

Naturally, the U.S. Olympic Committee is in shock as well. And the CEO is even offering to help. They say, “We at the USOC, as we said in an earlier statement, are exceptionally disappointed in him, as he is in himself.”

Ouch. But we still think one little bong pic shouldn’t tarnish his reputation forever. He’s a young guy, and this is probably the only time in his life he’s ever been able to sit back and relax and actually act like guys his own age.

We agree that Michael should take as much time as he needs to get back in the game, but ultimately he’ll probably regret it if he pulls out of the 2012 Olympics.

What do you think? Should Michael quit while he’s ahead? Or should he continue to work hard because this is his prime?

Apparently the 15 minutes Ashton Kutcher got last week wasn't enough for him because he's back in the press this week defending Michael Phelps and his need for weed.

"God forbid he hit a bong," Kutcher wrote on his Twitter account on Monday. "Go ask your 20-year-old kid what they did last weekend.

He added, "I'm not saying it was a smart move. But he doesn't need to be publicly outed for it. Whoever put the pic out is an a**!"

Phelps already issued a public apology saying: "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me," he said.

"For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Not that we're condoning his behavior, but he's been so disciplined for so long, he just needed to be a kid and experiment. It's not like he's waking up and getting baked every morning.

He made a mistake and apologized for it, everyone needs to cut him some slack. What are your thoughts?
