Michael Douglas Lohan, Sr. was born on April 25, 1960 in New York City, to Marilyn and Richard Lohan. On November 2, 1985, Michael Lohan married former singer and dancer, Donata Melina Nicolette "Dina" Sullivan. At the age of twenty, Michael Lohan became a Wall Street trader on the commodity exchange floor but was later under investigation for inside trading and ultimately convicted of criminal contempt of court in 1990.

While serving three years in the Nassau County jail, Dina Lohan gave birth to Lindsay Lohan (1986), Michael Jr. Lohan (1987), and Ali Lohan (1993) before his release in 1993. Michael received five years probation and by that time Lindsay was modeling for the Ford Models agency and appearing in commercials. In 1996, Dina gave birth to their son Dakota.

After Lindsay was hospitalized for an asthma attack during a movie shoot in 1997, Michael flew to Napa, California to be by her side, resulting in his arrest for violating his parole and consequently an additional year in prison.

As Lindsay's career continued to grow, Michael believed she should hire a professional manager instead of Dina's family members, which he called "hangers-on." Tensions within the family climaxed during Dakota's May 23, 2004 first communion party at Michael's Long Island home, when Michael and Dina's youngest brother, Matt Sullivan, came to blows. Despite Michael's claim that Matt initiated the fight, Michael was charged with attempted assault.

While awaiting sentencing, Michael was implicated in a car accident and charged with driving under the influence and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Michael took advantage of his time in prison this time around, learning singing and songwriting as well as becoming a minister through Teen Challenge, a faith-based sobriety program.

On June 29, 2004, Michael was arrested again for skipping out on a $3,800 bill at a Long Island hotel and later charged with assault after punching a sanitation worker for blocking his car. After serving a two-year sentence, Michael moved into a Teen Challenge center to train as a minister. Regardless of his progress, Dina filed for divorce on January 19, 2009.

Michael's troubles continued when he was charged with aggravated harassment in 2010, for reportedly making life-threatening calls to his-then-girlfriend, Erin Muller. He pleaded not guilty and the judge later waved the charges on the basis that Michael stays out of trouble.

His trouble-free lifestyle didn't last long and in 2011, Michael was arrested in Tampa, Florida for contacting his girlfriend, Kate Major, who had a restraining order against him.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a familiar commodity in the Lohan family, with Michael going in and out of prison, Dina's supposedly cocaine and alcohol crutch, and Lindsay's constant brush up with the law due to drug abuse. No matter how many rehabs or shows the family attends, their family drama continues to dominate their lives and is the basis of their fame.
