Douglas posed for pictures and walked the red carpet with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, but stayed quiet as a result of his throat cancer.
Sources tell Popeater,
"He's had an intensive course of radiation and chemotherapy to treat a tumor in his throat. It's left him feeling very tired and sometimes finding it very difficult to even speak. In a few weeks, we fear he won't be able to eat or swallow."
"He is in a no-win situation," a studio source added. "If Michael didn't show up, everyone would be talking about him. Yet at the same time if he did show up, the press would see for themselves that he isn't doing so great."
But co-star LaBeouf had kind words for Douglas, telling Us Magazine that Michael taught him what “strength” is.
"He's got a nice way of easing everybody’s tensions," he added. "When you walk onto a set like this, where it’s sacred ground, there’s a legacy at stake. But your mascot puts you at ease."
"He is a wolf, and he is a strong man," Shia said. "And I know of his vulnerabilities. When he came to set ... he was dealing with a lot, but never was it, 'Woe is me.' Ever."
Douglas has "a face they’re going to paint on walls," LaBeouf added. "They’re going to remember him forever. You can’t say that about a lot of people. He's an American institution. It’s intimidating and incredible and exhilarating and rewarding."
Wall Street star Josh Brolin also commented on Douglas’ state, saying he’s "doing as well as can be expected. I think the fact that the guy’s coming out here in the first place is a testament to who he is, to his character ... He’s not hiding, and I think that’s great."
We have so much respect for Michael Douglas! That has to take so much courage! He remains in our thoughts, and we wish him a full recovery!
