To make your way from the Hollywood D-list to it's esteemed A-list, you have to be selective in your career choices. Some celebs are good at it, others aren't so good, and yet others just get lucky. Some don't really need another career boost, but might be kicking themselves, anyway, after passing on something epic.

So why do celebs pass on these epic roles? Sometimes it's scheduling conflicts. Sometimes they're just too busy. And sometimes, a story about a ghost stalking his ex-girlfriend just sounds silly. Either way, there are plenty of stars who missed out on legendary gigs because they didn't make it work. Here are ten celebrities that passed up big movie roles. Check out our comparisons below...

Molly Ringwald: Molly Ringwald could've made it past the eighties if she would've said yes to the lead role in Pretty Woman or Ghost. What was she waiting for? You don’t get any more interesting than movies about hookers and ghosts. She was also offered a part in Scream but turned it down because she was in her late twenties and didn’t want a teenage role. Can you imagine her replacing Julia Roberts?

Antonio Banderas is speaking out for the first time about his wife Melanie Griffith recently entering rehab. A few weeks ago, Mel unexpectedly entered the Cirque Lodge in Utah to “get rid of her demons.” What those “demons” were exactly, we weren’t sure.

We’d heard talk that Antonio had given Melanie an ultimatum to get clean and sober once and for all. Antonio appeared as a guest on Ellen Degeneres, and said, "It's not a rumor, but let me explain to you.”

He went on to say, "It was said actually in some magazine that I said that I gave an ultimatum to my wife. That I present the matter of divorce because she has been involved in addictions and blah, blah, blah. Melanie has been addicted for many years and we always came out. We said it out loud. It was okay, we were never embarrassed of the situation but what happened she was clean and sober for six years."

Antonio says Melanie was doing fine with her sobriety for a full six years, up until a skiing accident in Aspen a year and a half ago. She underwent three operations on her knee, and was required to use narcotics again.

Antonio tells Ellen in the episode that airs today, "In March, she came to me and said, 'I'm feeling a little bit weak in my determination for this ... so I just thought to go to rehabilitation by myself.’ So the whole entire family is supporting her, and I am supporting her, and at this particular time more than ever. I'm very proud of her."

Banderas says the entire family is backing Melanie 100%. He says, "We have been following some type of therapy with other families. There are a number of invisible heroes working in AA all around the world. I just say to families, 'Don't get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on. And don't hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of this tunnel, and it is the person that you love back, and that is what I am searching for.' "

Wow! What an amazing support group Melanie has! It’s great to hear Antonio speak openly about Melanie’s addiction, and the family’s open mind towards her receiving help. So many people try and hide it from friends and family, so it’s a fresh of breath air to see the way they’re handling this. We wish Melanie the best of luck in conquering her demons!

We didn't see this one coming. Melanie Griffith has checked herself into rehab in Utah to get rid of her 'demons'.

"She is there to reinforce her commitment to stay healthy. This is part of a routine plan that was designed between her and her doctors years ago," Melanie’s publicist, Robin Baum, told Star magazine of the actress' stay at Cirque Lodge in Utah.

But an insider tells Star she agreed to go to rehab to save her marriage. "She's working with the counselors on getting control of her demons."

"The reason Melanie checked in was her husband was demanding that she get clean and sober," another source tells Star. "He told her that if she didn't get the help she needed it would be the end of their marriage."

According to a third source, "Melanie's struggling right now, but Antonio has been checking in on her as much as he is allowed, making sure she gets back on her feet. Without Antonio in her life, I honestly believe Melanie would be dead."

This isn't the first time Melanie has checked herself into rehab. Back in 1998 she spent some time at Daniel Freeman Hospital after developing an addiction to painkillers following a neck injury.

In 2007 she sent her then 18 year-old daughter Dakota to rehab at Visions Teen Treatment Centre in Malibu after discovering that she had a drug and alcohol problem.

We hope Melanie finally gets the help she desperately needs. It must be hard on her and the family to deal with a personal issue like this with the entire world watching.
