University of Notre Dame will be honoring Martin Sheen with the Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work. Sheen will receive the honor at the school's May 18th commencement.
Since 1883, the Laetare Medal has been awarded annually to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."
ND's president says Sheen has used his fame to draw attention to his fellow citizens to issues such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, and the killing of the unborn and capitol punishment. Heavy stuff. Too bad it doesn't look like Charlie is following in his father's footsteps.
