Born Marco Antonio Muniz on September 16, 1968, in New York City, Marc Anthony discovered his vocal abilities at a young age and further developed his skills by singing as a backup singer for freestlye music acts. Named after popular Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muniz, Anthony changed his name and started to become a sought-after backup vocalist in New York's underground scene.
Inspired by Spanish music and the likes of Juan Gabriel and Puente, Anthony released his debut Spanish-language album Otra Nota (1993) with the hit "Hast que te conoci." Tours across America soon followed, subsequently authenticating Anthony as the new voice of salsa.
Following the release of his follow-up album Todo a su tiempo in 1995, Anthony won the Billboard Award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year. Anthony's next Spanish album Contra La Corrient was released in 1997, with its lead single "Y Hubo Alguien" becoming his first number one single on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart and the album becoming the first salsa album to be ranked on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Anthony went on to gain a large when he released the English-language album Marc Anthony (1999) and its lead single "I Need To Know" earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He then dropped his salsa album Libre, which remained at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart for 14 weeks, followed by the less successful English-language album Mended (2002).
In 2004, Anthony dropped his Latin-pop infused album Amar Sin Mentrias prior to releasing his follow-up salsa album Valio La Pena. Amar Sin Mentrias went on to win Best Latin Pop Album of the Year while Valio La Pena won Best Tropical Album of the Year at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards.
Aside from music, Anthony has appeared in the action drama Hackers (1995), the drama Big Night (1996) with Stanley Tucci, the crime drama Man on Fire (2004) alongside Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning, as well as the TV drama series Hawthorne (2010 - 2011).
Anthony has most recently announced that he would be releasing his next salsa album sometime in 2013.
