Terrible new to report out of France! According to several media outlets, part of the stage at Madonna’s concert in Marseille on Thursday collapsed and fell on workers.
Police say it killed one person, and injured six. According to fansite madonnalicious (via Reuters, the stage was being set up for the show.
The frame "started shaking and collapsing", said Marseille city councillor Maurice Di Nocera. "Fortunately, it didn't collapse too quickly, as there would have been quite a few victims," he said, according to AFP news agency.
The concert at the Velodrome stadium, home to the Olympic Marseille soccer team, was scheduled for July 19th but has now been cancelled.
Technicians were setting up the stage ahead of the show when part of the roof collapsed.
UPDATE: Madonna just released the following statement about the incident: "I am devastated to have just received this tragic news," she said.
"My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families, along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."
